Clell Smith, who became superintendent of the Richland Springs school this school year, was elected to a three-year term at a meeting of the trustees last week. He came to Richland Springs from the San Saba schools.
John Bogard, a student of the University of Texas, spent the weekend with home folks.
Mark F. Barefoot, age 21 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Barefoot, of Bend, has been admitted to the Coast Artillery at Camp Allen, San Diego, Calif.
The long dream of Goldthwaite business men and citizens is about to come true – a paved highway from Goldthwaite to Priddy, one of the richest and most progressive towns in Mills County.
For the first time in her life, Mrs. C. C. Turbiville, 65, of San Saba, does not have a tooth of her own. The last was extracted last week. She was born with a tooth, according to her daughter, Mrs. H. B. Clark, who says that a sister of Mrs. Turbiville had two teeth at the age of two weeks. Mrs. Joe S. Clark, sister-in-law of Mrs. H. B. Clark, recalls that her son, Joe Jr., had part of a third set of teeth at the age of eight years.
Lieut. Hamil V. Carter, who was stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, has orders to report for duty to Camp Livingston, La. Lieut. Carter is the son of Mrs. Hattie Carter of San Saba.
James Earl Melton, who went through the Pearl Harbor surprise attack on Dec. 7, and spent a 10- day furlough with his parents, the O. J. Meltons, left Sunday to report for duty on the western coast. Melton was guest speaker at the Rotary Club.
Mrs. Tom F. Ward and daughters, Madeline and Marilyn, left Wednesday for a few days visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Windt, at Brenham.
40 Years Ago February 11, 1982
Airman Raul Zepeda, son of Primitivo and Manuela Zepeda of San Saba has been assigned to Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., after completing Air Force basic training. He is a 1981 graduate of San Saba High School.
San Saba Junior Varsity girls won over Cisco, 41-24. Tina Harvell was high point with 17. Tonya Davis had 5, Tana Burnham, Dani Hardy and Mary Jane Gamboa each had 4. Sylvia Robertson had 3 points. Beth Johnson and Suzie Clark with 2. They are competing in the San Saba freshman tournament.
Larry Lafferty of Austin visited over the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Ruby Hobbs, and other relatives.
Mandy McKee of Richland Springs visited last week with her grandmother, Mrs. Nolan McKee.
High school principal Ted Hubert and Counselor Larry Nettleship congratulated contest winner Quint Hibler this week after his suggestion of Killer Diller was accepted by the high school student body to name the new mascot. Quint is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hibler, San Saba.
Heather Linzey Young celebrated her first birthday Feb. 6 with a party hosted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Young. Guests present were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Linzey, the honoree's great grandparents; her grandfather, Bob Linzey; and her brother, Vance, all of San Saba; Ken, Cindy and J. B. Prater of Bend.
Dean and Flo Atchison celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary Jan. 23 when they were named honorees at a reception in the McCulloch Electric Building in Richland Springs. Their children, Deana Atchison Graham and Charles Atchison hosted the occasion. Atchison and the former Florene Munsell were married in 1947 at Dallas.
