    December 7, 1950

    Jeff Byrd, local grocer, who held an anniversary sale at his IGA Supermarket last weekend, reports record crowds of shoppers Friday and Saturday. Attendance prizes were awarded as follows: Mrs. Glenn Patton set of silverware; Mrs. B.F. Linn, life-size doll; G. Menchaca, $15 worth of groceries; Mrs. D. C. Sullivan, cookbook; Opie Hawks, cookbook; JoAnn Lemons, $15 in groceries; Bobby Ray, life-size doll; and Mrs. Albert Behrens, jumbo sack of flour.

    The appointment of Mrs. Reba Hale as fourth grade teacher was the major portion of business transacted by the San Saba school board Tuesday night during the regular monthly meeting. Mrs. Hale will replace Mrs. Mary Beth Page, who submitted her resignation to the board Tuesday.

    Brantley Barker, who will become sheriff of San Saba county in January, has announced the appointment of Huts Owen as deputy sheriff, and this week authorized Owen to post bond for the office.

    Joe Edmondson, 27-year old stock farmer from the Live Oak community, was elected president of the San Saba County Farm Bureau at a membership meeting on Nov. 28. Edmondson took office on Dec. 1, succeeding Henry Ratliff.

    San Saba High School last week was moved into AA classification by a far-reaching and drastic move by the Texas Interscholastic League. The new classification becomes effective next football season and brings together the Armadillos, Lampasas, Gatesville, Killeen and Belton into District 22-AA.

    The Roberds plan to move to Oklahoma around the first of the year.

    Everyone has nearly completed harvest of peanuts and cotton here.

    O.W. Taylor was a business visitor in San Saba Tuesday.

    Mrs. E. E. Risien, widow of San Saba's world-renowned pecan propagator, quietly observed her ninety-seventh birthday anniversary her Tuesday.

    December 10, 1970

    There were two babies born at San Saba Memorial Hospital from Nov. 29 to Dec. 7. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry M. Covington are the parents of Tammy Michelle, seven pounds, 15 ounces, born Nov. 29. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan E. Ellis are the parents of Kristi Leigh, six pounds, 10 ounces, born Dec. 6

    Lee Schneider of Field Creek visited Mr. and Mrs. James Smith and Ann Sunday.

    There were 10 boy and housefathers from the Cherokee Home for Children who went to Mason Friday afternoon for a deer hunt, returning home Saturday.

    Mrs. May McCurdy of Eventide Nursing Home in San Saba visited a few days last week with her daughter, Mrs. Elsie May.

    Fines for game violations are much greater than indicated in the Justice of Peace report, showing the amount collected by that office, for the month of November, published in last issue of The News & Star. The amount of the fine reported in Justice Court is that portion retained by the county, which is only 15 per cent of the total fine. The 85 per cent goes to Parks and Wildlife Department. Fine for killing a deer out of season is $100; having a deer not tagged, $25; killing deer without a permit,

    $50; a non resident hunting under resident license, $50; and hunting with another's license, $25.

    C.E. Tisdale exhibited the champion and reserve champion in-shell pecans at the annual San Saba County Pecan Show held here Dec. 3, 4 and 5, in Ranchmen's Tower Hotel lobby. The champion is a Wichita pecan; the reserve champion is a Comanche, which also was judged to have the best kernel in the in-shell class.

    M.D. Doak of Cockrell's Riverside Nursery was awarded a plaque for the champion shelling pecan, a Sioux, which was also judged most attractive. Cockrell's Nursery also took reserve champion shelling pecan with a Caddo variety and the nursery's natives were reserve champion.

    Susan Hamrick, San Saba County Pecan Queen, took reserve champion award in the Youth Division of the Foods Show in Connection with the 16th annual San Saba County Pecan Show. She was the first Pecan Queen to enter the Food Show. Jill Mask, 4-H Club member of Richland Springs, won the champion award of the division with a Fresh Pear-Pecan Cake.
