The other day I had the opportunity to visit NASA and look at the history of the space program. It was very informative, and some of the rockets that were used were on display (or replicas of them). There were some parts that were not open to the public that had been once before, I was told.

One of the things that was interesting to me was when one of the astronauts who had gone into space showed a picture of the earth from space. To see the orb that we call home was enlightening. It was even more so to me as I thought of the creation of God. He spoke it all into existence, and today He continues to sustain the earth in its orbit.

Years ago men thought that the earth was flat and that if you sailed out far enough in the sea you would fall off the world. The Word of God expels this kind of thinking. Note a couple of passages.

Job, in rebuking one of his friends who says he has sinned, points out, “He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters At the boundary of light and darkness.” Job 26:10 (NASB) Solomon would pen the words, “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,” Proverbs 8:27 (Solomon writes of wisdom speaking in this verse). The prophet Isaiah writes in chapter 40:22, “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” (NASB)

The earth on which we live was created by a Designer. He had a plan and in His wisdom has created the world and all that is in it. He continues to sustain the world on which we live.

But it will not always exist. The apostle Peter wrote in 2 Peter 3:10, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.” I know this is not a popular topic, but it is a fact that we must face. God has given us time on this earth to accept His teachings and to repent of our sins, and to confess Him before men and be baptized into Him to become children of God. After this, we are called to live a life of faithfulness to Jesus, Revelation 2:10.

We serve an amazingly, wonderful, powerful God who loves us and daily provides for our needs. He is patient waiting for all to turn from sin to Him. And only the saved and obedient to Him will live with Him eternally. Let’s all make sure we are one of them.
