The San Saba High School boys varsity powerlifting team was outstanding on Thursday, March 10, when the Dillos won the Region 2 Division 4 meet held at West High School in a big field of 25 other teams and had four individual lifters qualify for the upcoming state meet.
In a very competitive 181-pound division, Zuri Herrera was one of four Dillos to make state when he placed first and lifted 1,175 total pounds with 470 on the squat, 255 on the bench press, and 450 on the deadlift.
In the 308-pound division, Christian Ramirez was a state qualifier in second place as he lifted a whopping 1,535 total pounds with an eye-opening 700 on the squat, 335 on the bench press, and 500 on the deadlift. Also placing second and qualifying for state in the 123-pound division was Justin Hernandez as he lifted a total of 710 pounds with 260 on the squat, 150 on the bench press, and 300 on the deadlift.
San Saba’s fourth and final state qualifier in the 132-pound division was Winton Lackey in third place as he lifted 875 total pounds with 370 on the squat, 205 on the bench press, and 300 on the deadlift.
Although they did not make state, a pair of superheavyweights for the Dillos helped the team add points as they medaled. Juan Lopez placed fourth with a total of 1,105 pounds (450 on the squat, 280 on the bench press, and 375 on the deadlift), while Daylon Smith came in fifth place as he lifted 1,075 total pounds (430 on the squat, 280 on the bench press, and 365 on the deadlift).
Also recording a point toward San Saba’s team total was Everett Eidson placing fifth in the 148-pound division as he lifted 1,005 total pounds with 405 on the squat, 240 on the bench press, and 360 on the deadlift.
Up next, the Dillos head to compete in the Division 4 THSPA State Championships boys powerlifting meet on Friday, March 25, held at Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
