Message from Dr. Craig Whiting:

August has seen a slowdown in the number of new cases in the Hill Country, and Central Texas region as a whole, which is reflected in the fewer cases identified in San Saba County as well. This is an encouraging sign especially as all the school districts in our County will be open as of this week. Because this infection seems to generally be mild among children and young adults, we hope that we do not see a significant rise in cases of COVID-19 with schools open. The school districts are taking extra precautions to protect staff and students alike and their efforts are much appreciated.

While COVID-19 tends to be a mild infection in children, this raises some other concerns. This infection may spread more easily between children who will have trouble maintaining physical distance and compliance with masks. For this reason, it is critical that a child, with even mild cold symptoms such as low grade fever, cough, congestion, or sore throat, be kept home from school, church and sports events to prevent spread of infection to other children and from spreading infection to homes with more vulnerable adults – parents and grandparents who may have complications of this infection.

We are all experiencing “COVID-fatigue,” but there is hope, especially as we see the number of cases declining in our region and the reasonable expectation that effective treatments will be discovered.
