Since an employee at San Saba Nursing and Rehabilitation had tested positive for coronavirus May 16th, the following Monday, the Regional Health Department came to the nursing home and tested all employees and residents for the virus.

The positive employee immediately self-quarantined. That employee’s return to work could only be accomplished after two negative COVID-19 tests.

On the premise it could take a couple of weeks for tests results, a call was placed to Dr. Craig Whiting, Texas Department of State Health Services Local Health Authority for San Saba County, to inquire about the COVID-19 test results for San Saba Nursing and Rehabilitation. Dr. Whiting gave the following test results:

48 residents tested: all negative 61 employees tested: all negative

These results are obviously fantastic, as well as reflective of the nursing home’s stringent use of handwashing, gloves, masks, hand sanitizers and general nursing care regarding infection control. By the way, Dr. Whiting is also the Director of San Saba Nursing and Rehabilitation and this too speaks volumes for itself. The Director is responsible for the total medical operations of the nursing home. These negative results are a testament to the hard work of the nursing home staff, as directed by Dr. Whiting.

So, with this great news, let’s all continue to adhere to the 20-second handwashing (“Happy Birthday” song three times) ritual and social distancing rules, and use a mask when needed. Also, don’t go around anyone if you have a temperature, sore throat or cough, as well as don’t be around anyone who may be exhibiting the same signs and symptoms. When in doubt, call your health provider’s office for health care instructions and guidance.
