Responsible civic organizations from throughout our great country and our State of Texas do so much for our small towns, as well as for large cities, and the many residents of each! I, for one, continue to be amazed at some of the wonderful civic activities of San Saba organizations!

KSSB (Keep San Saba Beautiful) and its members, among all its activities, have made the large flower-laden pots on San Saba street corners beautiful things to enjoy each year. Gail Bruner and others work tirelessly to keep the colorful containers on street corners and plantings updated all throughout Mill Pond Park, spring, summer, and fall!

San Saba Garden Club(SSGC), of which I am a proud member, also regularly assists KSSB with the beautification of San Saba and its surroundings. SSGC helps with many other projects from landscaping, mission renovation housing projects, choosing Homes of the Month, and providing scholarships for graduating San Saba High School seniors among others. Decorating and maintaining the Blue Star Highway Monument each November is another SSGC activity.

Local churches all work for the betterment of our community and frequently join together to ensure programs like sending food home for hungry children to share after school and on weekends. The larger churches, like First Baptist Church and The Father’s House, feed many people at Thanksgiving time, and many of the churches establish and maintain food pantries. The local Shared Blessings Mission is a communal effort from San Saba churches, all of which make San Sabans grateful and proud!

Such San Saba civic organizations, of which there are many, do great community things….Rotarians, Pierians, others more than I know, both local and national.

Unfortunately, some of the organizations found elsewhere in our country are not so civicminded or magnanimous! One that has been in the news recently is the NRA, the National Rifle Association. The organization has been found to have been using membership dues to pay for luxury yachts, expensive clothing, fancy hairdos and makeup. Regardless, it is definitely not in line with the stated purpose of lobbying on behalf of members to ensure Second Amendment rights. Ah me!

Fortunately, San Sabans continue to be generous and helpful to all its citizens! Volunteers and local civic organizations make San Saba a great place to live for all of us! Thank you, San Saba!
