The San Saba High School varsity baseball and softball teams competed this past week on Thursday, April 14, as the Dillos hosted Johnson City High School and the Lady Dillos traveled to take on rival Goldthwaite High School.

San Saba Dillos 0, Johnson City Eagles 8

Following a 7-1 victory on the road against Center Point High School on Monday night, the Dillos returned home last Thursday against a very good Johnson City squad. Unfortunately for San Saba, the bats weren’t able to get going all night offensively as the Eagles shutout the Dillos by a score of 8-0.

After Johnson City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, the Dillos would go on to have a rough fourth inning as the Eagles blew the game open with six runs in the top of the frame to take a comfortable 7-0 lead.

In the loss, Weston Oliver started at pitcher for the Dillos and pitched a mostly solid game as he went 5.0 innings on 92 pitches with eight strikeouts. Only one of the seven runs he allowed on the night were earned. Reagan Mejia came on in relief to pitch 2.0 innings and had four strikeouts with only one run allowed.

San Saba had a quiet night offensively against elite Johnson City pitching as the Dillos only had three hits as a team and drew just one walk. Lance Taylor had a double for San Saba, while Oliver and Hayden Reeves each had a single apiece.

The Dillos (9-8 overall and a 4-3 mark in District 29-2A games) are playoff-bound and will conclude the regular season over the next week as San Saba will travel on April 19 to take on Mason High School, remain on the road on April 22 for a district game at Junction High School, and will return home on April 26 for Senior Night vs. Harper High School.

San Saba Lady Dillos 12, Goldthwaite Lady Eagles 25

In what has been an extremely tough 2022 season for the Lady Dillos softball squad, San Saba showed some promise offensively last Thursday on the road in a 25-12 loss to Goldthwaite.

The Lady Dillos struck in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Karlee Reed, an RBI single from Bailey Briseno, and Macy Sebastain scoring on an error to quickly go up 3-0. However, the Lady Dillos were up against a potent Lady Eagles offense that went on to score a whopping 20 runs combined over the next two innings.

In the top of the third inning, San Saba had its best scoring outburst of the season with seven runs in the frame. Virginia Diaz of the Lady Dillos smacked an RBI double, Olivia Sebastain had an RBI single, Reed added another run-scoring hit, and Selenda Robles scored on an error. After the inning was over, the Lady Dillos had cut the deficit to 20-10 but were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

San Saba softball was able to pull off a 21-16 victory on Monday night at home vs. Medina High School for the Lady Dillos’ annual Senior Night contest and end the 2022 season on a high note. In next week’s edition of the San Saba News & Star, a much more detailed recap of that game should be available.
