The San Saba High School boys varsity basketball team clinched its third consecutive district championship title on Friday, February 18, as the Dillos went on the road and beat Johnson City High School 48-33 to wrap up District 29-2A play.

The Dillos were expected to take care of business in their regular-season finale against the Eagles, who were eliminated on Senior Night from competing in the upcoming 2A playoffs.

San Saba kept Johnson City at bay with a superb defensive team performance throughout and had several key players step up to get the job done on offense under head coach Mark Kyle.

Senior guard Reagan Mejia continued his push to become the District 29-2A Most Valuable Player as he led all scorers on the night with a game-high 14 points. Fellow senior guard Drake Bryant also scored in double figures with 10 points, while junior forward Noah Martinez had a solid game for the Dillos with eight points in the win over Johnson City.

The Dillos wrapped up the 2021-22 regular season at 19-8 overall and a great 11-1 mark in District 29-2A games. San Saba will play for a bi-district championship at 8 p.m. on February 22 vs. Sabinal High School at neutral site Kerrville Tivy High School. Tuesday night’s game will be a rematch between San Saba and Sabinal from last season’s regional quarterfinal matchup when the Dillos went up against a very talented senior-heavy Yellowjackets team and took them to the brink in a 46-43 loss for San Saba. The winner of the game between the Dillos and the Yellowjackets will take either Freer High School or Kennedy High School in the area round of the 2A playoffs.
