The San Saba Armadillos (37, 2-4 in district) season ended last Friday night when they were defeated soundly by the district 5-2A champions, Tolar Rattlers (9-1, 6-0 district). San Saba was still in the hunt for the fourth seat in the playoffs, but a Hamilton win over Goldthwaite eliminated any chances of the Dillos advancing.

On November 6th, 1924, an article was written by Thebe Hunter of the San Saba News describing the game against Brownwood in the previous week. Almost 99 years to the date, Mr. Hunters description best summed up the game against the Tolar Rattlers last Friday evening.

Without superhuman effort on their part, the beefy Tolar high school gridsters rolled up a 63-0 count against San Saba’s sluggish standard bearers last Friday. The Purples, with few exceptions and throughout the greater part of the engagement, disported themselves in listless fashion and not until late in the fray did they wake from their coma and offer any serious resistance. All through the game, the Rattlers ponderous machine, engineered by their jaunty skill players, swept merrily on its way to smearing the lethargic Armadillos. The local aggregation revived sufficiently during the culminating sets of the conflict to give the spectators some kind of run for their money.

So now the sun has set on the 2023 season, and the Dillos will regroup and prepare for another year. San Saba will be losing a solid group of seniors, but with the majority of the team coming back and an undefeated junior varsity team coming up, San Saba will look to get back to their winning ways. Be on the lookout in the next couple of weeks for all-district selections and final stats as they come out.
