After the customary summer hiatus, San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) met Tuesday, September 6, at 2:00 p.m. in the historic Mill Pond Clubhouse. The club is now in its 86th year of continuous existence.

Guests and members were treated to a light lunch of assorted tea sandwiches, fresh red and green grape clusters, cookies, miniature raspberry cheesecakes, and mixed nuts. Beverages included fruited ice water and coffee. Hostesses for this delicious spread were Rhonda Killion (chair), Denise Mayfield, Sandra Parks, and Betty Jo Fisher.

The program, “President’s Year at a Glance,” was led by Debbie Shahan, who is serving her second year as the club’s chief officer. With new yearbooks in hand, members and guests were introduced to this year’s theme, which encourages us all to “Plant America . . . Enjoy the Journey.”

Each month’s program was announced and eagerly discussed. Upcoming presentations include a guest lecture by John Thomas, founder of Fredericksburg Wildseed Farms with its spectacular gardens and extensive inventory of wildflower seeds. Thomas will instruct members on the sometimes tricky venture of sowing and growing wildflowers in one’s own garden. Other programs include a trip to Homestead Craft Village in Waco to learn about organic gardening cheese making, basket making and more. January, the club’s 87th birthday month, will be celebrated by a reenactment of some of the club’s most daring “adventures” and its key role in saving the historical building in Mill Pond Park that is now the official SSGC Clubhouse. Other highly anticipated programs include a hands-on gourd decorating workshop, a “save our dark skies” presentation by Beth Griess, and a scenic driving tour to the Willow City Loop in April.

Lisa Sloan announced the club’s award of two $500 academic scholarships to class of 2022 SSHS seniors. Congratulations to Sierra Tharp and MacKinzey Saldivar for the outstanding high school achievements that earned them these scholarships. Club members wish both young women all the best as they begin their college experience.

Member Sarah Lott offered the horticulture tip of the day with instructions on early fall gardening tasks.

SSGC meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Mill Pond Clubhouse. Anyone interested in becoming a member of this civic-minded gardening group is encouraged to attend any of our monthly meetings and learn more about the club’s objectives, goals, and accomplishments. Whether you come for a single visit or decide to become a member, you will be warmly welcomed and most likely leave with a valuable tidbit or two to improve your gardening endeavors.
