Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Timberlake who own two thoroughbred German shepherd dogs, have a fine litter of puppies and out of this litter a female pup will go to the Seeing-Eye Inc., Morristown, New Jersey, to be trained as a guide and when trained will be matched to its master, who will be a war veteran that has lost his eyesight fighting for his country and fellow man. This dog is being donated to Dogs for Defense Inc. by the Timberlakes and the balance of the litter will be sold at weaning time.

W. M. Campbell superintendent of schools, has announced that the local school board has accepted Miss Gertrude Quinn's resignation and has elected Mrs. Clyde Smith to fill the vacancy and Mrs. Betty Jo Miller has been elected to teach in the grade school this year.

The San Saba Community Canning Center closed after 8 weeks of successful operation under the supervision of Edwin L. Reese and Mrs. M. H. Duncan as teachers and Mrs. O. C. Mills as teacher-helper. One hundred twelve people canned 2983 containers of food for home consumption. Sixteen communities were represented from time to time at the canning center. Some of the 112 people came as many as 7 times.

H. C. Bennett has gone to Alpine for his health and will either stay there or some other place in West Texas in a high altitude until cool weather arrives in San Saba.

Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Reese and daughter, Edwina, have been visiting her parents and family in De Leon the past two weeks. Mr. Reese attended a course at Stephenville while there.

Efforts will be made to have the streets of the city improved during the next few weeks, according to City Commissioner L. C. Ward, who discussed the work at a meeting of the Lions Club last week when he stated that it was hoped to secure the services and machinery of a contracting firm now working on the state highways in the county. With sufficient funds available, plans would include the resurfacing of the streets with asphalt and finely crushed gravel, the first work to have been given generally since the pavement was laid in the winter of 1930-31.

San Saba Booster Club members elected Harry Shapiro, president for the coming year, at the annual Hamburger Supper honoring the Armadillos and their coaches last Thursday night, Aug. 22, in Mill Pond Park. Shapiro succeeds Billy F. Kidd as head of the Dillo Boosters.

Kenneth Smith, who recently completed training at the Highway Patrol Academy in Austin, has been named a Highway Patrolman at Eastland, by the State Department of Public Safety. A graduate of San Saba High School, Smith studied law enforcement two years at Central Texas College, Killeen, before entering the Academy.

Darwin Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lewis, has accepted a music scholarship from Howard Payne College and enrolled there Wednesday. A 1970 graduate of Richland Springs High School, he is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lewis and Mrs. Archie Newby, all of Richland Springs.

Recipes: BAKED PORK CHOPS By Mrs. Rader Dick - Salt and pepper each pork chop. Place in baking dish and put one tsp. Miracle Whip on each chop. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for one hour and 30 minutes. Chicken also can be cooked in this manner.

Mrs. Ted Brown Jr. has bought the old Rough Creek schoolhouse near her ranch home. She and her husband, who operate a large modern furniture store here, as well as her parental ranch in the Rough Creek community, have had it moved to a little glade on the ranch where it will become "The Little Red School House" to the community after a couple or three coats of red paint. Mrs. Brown, the former Annabelle Long, attended her first school there many years after her father, George W. Long, her grandfather, Frank H. Long, John Gay and Henry W. Gregg hauled the lumber by wagon from Austin in 1904 for the construction in the little ranch community, 12 miles southeast of San Saba.
