From a November 1980 issue–SAN SABA COUNTY'S FIRST SCHOOL BUS –On Nov. 30, 1929, voters of San Saba and Harkeyville school districts voted to consolidate the Harkeyville school with San Saba ISD. Then, in January, 1930 a school bus purchased by the San Saba district started bringing the students of the Harkeyville school to San Saba. The former Harkeyville school was one of the oldest schools in the county, having the first term taught there in 1870, when a log school house was built on a tract of land donated for the purpose by I.M. Harkey, San Saba county pioneer. The log cabin was replaced by a more modern building and was used continuously each school term until its doors were closed in 1930. Though identification is incomplete, students riding that first school bus include, bottom row, L-R ?-Wilson, Clyde Marler, Palmer Lackey, ?-Franklin, ?-Pierce, ?-Franklin, [unknown], Dean Bagley, James Harkey, ?-Wilson, ?-Pierce, Ed McKee, ?-Patton, and ?-Pierce: standing, [unknown], Fanchen Lackey, ?-Patton, ?-Pierce, J.M.
