SSGC Fall Yard of the Month

The San Saba Garden Club is delighted to recognize Linda Parks of 505 West Dry Street as the recipient of its Fall Yard of the Month award. Her property—known locally as the historic Campbell–Parks House—was built in 1873 by Ed Campbell and holds the distinction of being the first residence constructed on what is now Dry Street.

The home’s expansive front lawn is a lush carpet of carefully maintained St. Augustine grass shaded by towering native oaks. Along the covered front porch, flowerbeds burst with seasonal color, framing the home’s low railing and lovingly handrestored wooden slats. When photographed for this feature, Linda was found enjoying a beautiful autumn afternoon, reading in one of her porch rockers. At the opposite end, a cushioned patio set invites friendly conversation, while the home’s perfectly preserved handmade red brick siding quietly reveals its age and character.

The Campbell–Parks House is deeply rooted in San Saba history. Linda and her late husband, Owen Parks—both lifelong San Sabans—purchased the home in 1983, reconnecting Owen with his family’s early ties to the property. Owen’s great-aunt and her husband once lived there alongside the original Campbell family, and his mother fondly remembered playing at the house as a child. She later shared treasured family memorabilia with Linda and Owen after they became its caretakers. Linda’s own great-aunt also owned the home at one time, making the residence a remarkable link between two San Saba families.

Early photographs depict herds of cattle grazing nearby and extensive vegetable gardens that once stretched across the surrounding acreage. In its earliest days, the home relied on a cistern for water and was warmed by two large fireplaces and a wood stove in the kitchen.

Today, Linda Parks continues to honor that heritage through her stewardship of the property. Her thoughtful landscaping, seasonal decorations, and love for native plants have kept the yard a bright reflection of both history and hometown pride.

The San Saba Garden Club congratulates Linda Parks on receiving the Fall Yard of the Month award and thanks her for helping keep San Saba beautiful— one flowerbed at a time.
