The San Saba Garden Club is pleased to recognize the home of Scott and Abby Snyder, 506 West Storey, as its July Yard of the Month.
Scott, retired principal of San Saba High School, and Abby have created a landscape that reflects both careful planning and a genuine love of gardening. Their lush green lawn frames immaculate flower beds that continue to evolve as the couple introduces more Texas native plants into the landscape. A recent project has been clearing out older plantings and replacing them with native Texas species. Golden lantanas bloom despite the summer heat, and a beautifully pruned crape myrtle bursts with vibrant pink blossoms.
When asked what she enjoys most about gardening, Abby quickly responded, 'Seeing the results.' She is especially proud of the spectacular display of Texas bluebonnets that blanketed the yard this spring. The flowers have become so well established that she has collected and scattered seeds throughout the flower beds and along the fence line in hopes of enjoying even more blooms in the years ahead.
The Snyder landscape also features several thoughtful touches, including decorative concrete rock borders and a rain barrel in the backyard to capture precious rainfall.
Perhaps Abby's favorite quotation best expresses the spirit behind the couple's award-winning yard: 'The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the bird for mirth, One is closer to God in a garden, Than anywhere else on earth.'
