On Wednesday evening, May 14, the San Saba County Sheriff's Office and the City of San Saba Police Department hosted a moving Law Enforcement Memorial Service to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Held at 6 p.m., the ceremony brought together law enforcement, local leaders, and members of the community to reflect, remember, and pay tribute. This year’s service honored the memory of Constable Hyatt and Chief Newkirk, and included a roll call of 16 Texas peace officers and 2 K-9s lost in 2024.
Sheriff David L. Jenkins delivered a heartfelt speech, recognizing both the fallen and the families left behind. “Evenings like this remind us that service does not end when the daylight fades,” he said. “We stand together tonight to remember, to renew our promise, and to honor those who gave everything for the safety of others.”
City Manager Scott Edmondson shared the history of National Police Week, first declared in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. He noted that over 26,000 officers nationwide — including 2,271 in Texas — have died in the line of duty since 1786. “The names we read tonight are more than statistics,” Edmondson said. “They are friends, neighbors, and heroes who stood for something greater than themselves.”
Chief Deputy Reid Daly led the dedication of a memorial wreath, placed in honor of the fallen. “Let it remind us of the weight of the badge, the cost of duty, and the enduring light of their service,” he said, before the reading of names began.
Music played a powerful role in the evening. A San Saba ISD band member performed “Taps,” and Jake Scott played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes — both stirring moments that brought reflection and reverence to the service.
The San Saba County Sheriff’s Office and City of San Saba Police Department thank all who attended and continue to support law enforcement. The ceremony served not only as a remembrance, but also as a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to service, honor, and community.
