The San Saba Garden Club celebrated the club’s 90th birthday at the monthly meeting held in the basement of the San Saba First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, January 6th. Yummy treats on laden trays included cheeses with crackers, assorted fruit, candy coated nuts, cookies, and stuffed crescent rolls made by hostesses Marissa Kilman, Janice Bates, and Denise Mayfield. Twenty members, along with guest Laurie Fleet, and speaker Chris Davenport, enjoyed visiting and welcoming in the New Year 2026 while snacking.
An informative and fun program was presented by Chris Davenport, who grew up in San Saba and graduated from San Saba High School in 1993. Chris, a banker in San Antonio, became a beekeeper in his backyard several years ago and eventually moved his business to family land near Star, Texas where he and his family continue tending the colonies. On hand, Chris showed equipment used with bees in tow, but contained, thankfully to all of us! Via Power Point, Chris shared insightful details of honey bee biology and behaviors, along with how they contribute to gardens and agriculture as pollinators. Then everyone searched for the Queen bee that was inside that busy box!
The business meeting followed with the announcing of the Quilt Raffle winner who was Pam Riggs, the progress of donations coming in for the restoration of the historic Garden Club building, the anticipation of work beginning soon after grants requested are declared yay or nay, and the plans for Kids’ Nature Kamp near the end of May.
Our next meeting will be held February 3rd, at 2 p.m., same location, 207 E. Commerce St., thanks to the wonderful generosity of the First Presbyterian Church. Allison Schwarz from San Angelo will be our guest speaker presenting a program on Pesky Insects.
