The San Saba Garden Club honored the yard at 602 S. Fentress, the work of Wendy Gonzales, as November's Yard of the Month. Trees there include a lovely mimosa on the east by the mailbox and a large pecan along the southeast fence. Non-bearing trees bear the planters of Boston fern and teardrops of blooming succulents.
Boston ferns also hang from the east, along the front of the house. Along the north side, potato vines in green and purple spill over the grass that covers the once bare driveway. A trellis of trumpet flowers shields the south deck, as well as the northwest corner.
Wendy has begun preparing her yard for cooler weather, pulling up bare vines, trimming petunias, and moving planters of shrubs to the backyard to water and cover for winter. Her sons are building a greenhouse to help save her plants.
The planters along the back deck have been grazed by neighborhood peacocks and wandering deer. However, with Wendy's tender care, even the pentunias have returned to blossoms.
