The San Saba Garden Club met for their first meeting of the new club year on Tuesday, September 2, in the home of Betty Jo Fisher. Normally, club meetings are held in the historic clubhouse in Mill Pond Park. Due to flooding occurring twice in July that resulted in the complete dismantlement of the inside contents, kind members have offered to host this year’s meetings in their homes or churches.
Amid much afternoon excitement, the co-presidents for the new term, Marjean Alexander and Cindy Sloan, gave a warm welcome to 20 attendees including three new members, Dixie, Melinda, and Julie. Prayers of thanks and blessings were offered before snack time and fellowship. As the program for the month was given, “The Year at a Glance,” presidents informed membership that the theme of our new garden club season is “An Extraordinary Year-History in the Making.” New yearbooks were distributed, and contents were presented and explained by the leadership. Three new Ad-Hoc Committees “Clubhouse Rebuilding,” “Fundraising,” and “Celebration” were introduced. The first two listed here have already been functioning the past two months, anxious to move forward on renovating our special “club home.”
Our membership wants everyone to know that in the 1950s, San Saba Garden Club members saved the historic clubhouse, actually a dilapidated mill, from a demolition wrecking ball on site, going to the courthouse and begging the city officials to allow the club to make it their own, and restoring it to a usable structure. The situation proved positive and, after time, a lovely place for meetings and other events was established, with many fundraising efforts occurring through the years. At the present, we are starting over again and appreciate all the wonderful encouragement from our community in the way of donations and memorials made thus far. Other fund-raising efforts are being planned for the renovations that are being discussed in the rebuilding committee.
At the conclusion of the first meeting, ladies decided to push forward with the dedicated projects we have pledged to do each year. These include gardens, donations, and offerings of service. There is much work to do, but we are willing to “care for our community and to make this a more beautiful place in which to live” as our San Saba Garden Club Creed so strongly suggests.
On Tuesday, October 7th, members will travel to San Angelo to tour the International Water Lily Collection on Park Street. Interested in joining us in membership? Contact Debbie Shahan at 325-372-7260.
