On March 5, 2024, 16 members of the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) gathered for their monthly meeting at the clubhouse in Old Mill Pond Park. Activities began at 2:00 p.m. under the capable guidance of President Debbie Shahan.
Marjean Alexander was chair of the March hostess committee, joined by Barbara Bell and Sandra McCrary, the latter unfortunately unable to attend. The clubhouse was adorned with bunnies along the clubhouse walkway, beside the welcome display, atop appliances, and on refreshment tables. An antique egg crate, twinkling lights, and giant plaid bows completed the kaleidoscope of pastel hues.
A lavish spring-themed buffet was arranged on an heirloom yellow linen tablecloth. Silver trays showcased an array of delectable treats, including a rabbitshaped vegetable charcuterie, chicken-salad stuffed cherry tomatoes, bacon-and-pimentocheese spread on homemade brioche rolls, deviled eggs, and sausage & cheese wonton cups. Cheesecake-filled strawberries, key lime dessert wedges ,and assorted spring candies added a touch of sweetness to the savories.
A separate beverage table held refreshing cucumber water and a fresh lime drink.
The highlight of the meeting was the hands-on flower pressing workshop led by multitalented club member Dianna Furlan. Drawing on her expertise, Furlan explained the intricate art of flower pressing, using both locally sourced blooms and commercially produced specimens to illustrate. Pansies, yarrow, and geranium carolinianum were among the meticulously pressed flowers Furlan prepared and shared, demonstrating that dried and pressed weeds are no less artistic than cultivated flora.
In addition to the dried blooms, Furlan curated a diverse selection of materials for the day's creative endeavors, including aged sheet music and other intriguing elements, sparking the imaginations of all present. Attendees enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to craft beautiful framed pictures and decoupaged eggs, rocks, and watering cans.
Four flower presses designed and constructed by Furlan were raffled to club members, with proceeds going to the club’s general fund.
In lieu of the regular April meeting, SSGC members will travel to Prickly Pair Flower Farm in Lampasas.
