Guest speaker was Cindy Prater who is the owner/broker of San Saba Realty Cindy Prater told her personal story of creating a family owned ranch. The purchase occurred when her grandparents had passed away and their children were emotionally divided as to whether to retain the ranch in the family.

Cindy devised a plan for the extended family to purchase the ranch. The ranch was appraised for value. The descendants formed an LLC and pooled their money. A local bank assisted with a loan for the remaining amount of the purchase price. Ownership shares were then issued.

Once the LLC was formed, Cindy felt it important to continue the legacy of love and learning that her grandparents had given them over the years.

“Cousin Camp” was organized in 1998 with 25-35 kids.

Since then the attendance has grown to 40-50 cousins. The week is a combination of work (each child has a job to do) and then there is also time to play with some educational sessions added. Examples of educational sessions include: riflery, arts and crafts, wildlife instruction, or first aid. If a child is under 8 years old, a parent must be with them. Camp closes with a Sunday church service.

Early on, Cindy had devised a mission statement for Cousin Camp, it was “making memories.” Judging from the success of Cousin Camp, Cindy has achieved her mission and more.
