The Richland Springs Report

I’m running late this week. I had this article all planned out and circumstances seem to have blocked my progress. The first block is this intense heat. I can’t keep up with the garden and the yard. The heat is sucking the life out of the plants. I can’t say it’s being too kind to me since I don’t do heat well.

I was planning my Monday when Baylor Scott & White called me. It seems that I’m ineligible to donate my kidney because I’m too old. Although I understand the age issues, it seems arbitrary to just say no because of a person’s age. To all extents and purposes, I’m in fairly good shape.

Donna Hill and I were in Marble Falls most of the day. It’s always fun to go trekking with Donna. We have had some marvelous conversations on our trips. Usually when I travel with Russ there is silence in the car. We had a good day.

Plans are in full swing for the 1st of July Richland Springs Celebrations. There will be plenty of vendors; the Baptist Church will open their fellowship hall as a cooling station for overheated visitors. The parade will be early in the morning. I expect by the time it is over the candy will be melting on the pavement.

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do, but I’m honored to have been chosen as the MC for the parade. The downtown stores will be open, and I believe Chrissy’s Plants and Things will have tables, chairs, and fans under the big tree for weary travelers. They will also be running hayrides back and forth to events. So, sharpen your washer skills, haul out your ATV and prepare to celebrate Independence Day.

I spent a lovely Saturday in Fredericksburg having breakfast at the Old German Bakery with my son and his family. We usually eat then sit in the park catching up on each other’s busy lives. My grandson Dustyn is recovering from knee surgery. He has many weeks of rehab before him, but he is doing better. Bryson announced that he is pursuing a new minor. He has been persuaded by the music department to take on a music minor. He is a gifted musician who has learned to play many instruments. His most gifted instrument is the piano which he taught himself to play. He will be performing in more concerts. He may come in late July and play for me at church. My nurse granddaughter Kaitlynn was at work and could not join us. I can never get enough of my grown kids like so many of you reading this column.

Being a grandparent is fun.

The Baptist Church is planning to have a back-to-school bash in August right before the kids go back to school.

There will be multiple activities, and the kids will leave with a backpack for school. So, parents, unless you really want to, there is no need to buy school supplies. Save your money for school clothes.

Please check with the school manual for dress codes.

We are saddened to report that Diana Hain passed away last week. Her memorial services will be held at Shiloh Church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. We have multiple people fighting cancer on the prayer list. We need prayer for rain, for our country, our borders, our congress, and our border agents. The new film Song of Freedom will be out July 4th, and we urge everyone to view it. It is a true-life story addressing the issue of human trafficking. The star is the actor who portrayed Jesus in The Passion. Stay cool and safe. Have a wonderful week.
