The Richland Springs Report

Goodness me, we have been blessed with several good showers lately.

I’m sure my trees are excited, and I know for sure my garden loves the nourishing rain. Now I need to go around and empty out all the buckets that gathered rain and pour out the future nesting places of mosquitoes. I need to up my B vitamin intake because those little biters are eating me up. Normally they don’t bother me too much, but I am riddled with mosquito holes. Praise God for the rain, bring me anything you want Lord.

I love how people share their produce. Jason Lewis is the king of squash. If you go by his house, you will see a box outside the gate with free squash. I went by his garden today, and it is a magnificent sight. I’m encouraged to go and take the master gardeners course to see if I can replicate his impressive work. I only planted three squash, he planted 47. I will trade him with some of my corn when it gets done. Both he and Kay McKee have also planted lots of tomatoes.

I’m content with my seven. I will have some to share and some to can.

Chrissy had her big garage sale on Friday and Saturday. Even at prices like 10 cents or 25, she still had many glasses, cups, and miscellaneous items. Goodwill is the next stop for cleaning out the shed. I hope everyone has noticed that Annie’s deer have returned home. They were stored for safekeeping until the property was ready to welcome them home.

The kids are out of school for the summer. Please remember to watch out for children playing in the park and riding their bikes around town. Our kids don’t have much traffic, so they forget to look both ways before crossing. Congratulations to all our graduates and teachers for another successful year. I had to smile this morning when Johnnie Reeves asked for graduates and Lucas Oldham raised his hand as a kinder graduate. He lifted it tall and strong. Congratulations, Lucas.

A little bird told me Ian Haug is on a trip to Alaska with his grandparents. I can assure you he will have a wonderful life experience. I think I’m going to head to Canada after the ladies quilting trip. I just haven’t picked a date. Usually I head there in July, but I might wait until September. That’s not an option I have had in the past, but I’m not taking a teaching assignment this year.

I’m not sure how I feel about that. I guess I can change my mind if I get bored or miss my kids too much. I’m fortunate to have found a job I love that has kept me happy for over 25 years. Hopefully, I have impacted most of my students in a positive way.

I had a strange thought this morning. I was thinking about a Steven King book that was made into a movie. I was stupid enough to watch it one evening. His books and movies are not something you easily forget.

It’s been at least 10 years, and I still shudder over that movie. I decided to see what it was that bothered me so much and instead my mind went on a tangent. The movie features Satan messing with a small town. He steals all the children, kills off adults one by one, and threatens more deaths. The final straw is he will take all the children away. He allows the town to pick one child as a sacrifice to him for the release of the others. Against the will of a father, one young boy is chosen to live with Satan. It dawned on me that our freedom from death was granted by a Father who sacrificed his son to save anyone who would accept his gift. I don’t ever want to forget the heavy cost of that sacrifice. The analogy made it easier for me to reflect on that awful movie.

There are so many cancer patients needing our prayers. I heard Jeremy Young was having difficulty recovering from his surgery and getting strong enough to take the cancer treatments. Please remember the family of Patsy Nadine Maultsby and the Ragsdale family. Please remember our country in prayer, the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms, the unrest in the world around us, our border officers, our police officers, and most of all our precious troops and their families.
