San Saba's parks are such an asset to our community in natural beauty, diverse recreational opportunities, and fulfilling relaxation moments. Thankfully, many folks and out of town visitors are finding pleasure in each and every day no matter the season!
Earlier this year when the Keep San Saba Beautiful Commission saw an unfinished task in the Mill Pond Park gazebo area, they began to initiate the plans to finish the near 70-yard long and five-foot tall rock retaining wall that creates a barrier between the east pond walkway and the upper gathering area at the often used spacious gazebo. Farrel Whitley actually began the project working for the City of San Saba prior to his retirement several year ago. In January of this year, Kathleen Hawkins, KSSB Commission chairman, approached the San Saba Businessmen's League about granting some funds from the San Saba Community Foundation for the completion of this unfinished park project. By March, Mrs. Hawkins, with the encouragement of the City of San Saba, had the approved needed financial support from the SSBL and put together a plan to enlist the help of the San Saba community in working on the project. Through delays with the COVID pandemic, hot summer days, and finding workers and supplies, the Keep San Saba Beautiful Commission is happy to announce that the undertaking has finally been completed this October!
Appreciation for "COMMUNITY EFFORT" is acclaimed by the KSSB organization! Without assistance from local businesses, individuals, and organizations, the undertaking could not have been accomplished. Texas Architectural Aggregates, Inc. (David Williams) donated sand. Barnes & McCullough (Tony Cantu), Pecan Valley Hardware (Jackie Shahan), Larry & Donna Baker, Ray & Kathleen Hawkins, and KSSB donated pallets of masonry cement. Ingram Ready Mix and Greater Texas Stone discounted material used on the project. Notable is the fact that the rocks are harvested right here in our San Saba County. Farrel Whitley greed to oversee the actual building of the wall, the City of San Saba provided several talented rock layers also transportation in gathering materials, and then KSSB volunteers came along cleaning up the grout along with the residue and also carried small rocks to fill the cavities.
Working together can make things happen in a really good way! The Keep San Saba Beautiful Commission and the San Saba Businessmen's League hope that everyone will enjoy Mill Pond Park and its newly completed beautiful wall and winding path around lovely Mill Pond.
