Last week, Cherokee hosted a high school level basketball tournament. It takes everyone in our village to make an event like this happen. Whether you worked the books, the clock, the concession stand, or the hospitality room, we are thankful for you. To everyone who donated food for the tournament, thank you as well. I personally worked the hospitality room, and I cannot tell you how complimentary every single visitor was about the quality of our food. I am so proud to live in a place that is the epitome of hospitable. The Cherokee Indians placed 3rd in the tournament with Joel Valdez being selected as all- tournament player. The Lady Indians won the tournament, defeating Rochelle in the championship game. Chloe Berrio was selected tournament MVP and Maycie Shanklin was all-tournament.

Our GT classes in junior high and elementary participated in the Wreaths Across America program this year. This program allows you to purchase wreaths to place on veterans’ graves. Since this was our first year, our goal was 10 wreaths. We were given 24 wreaths from the program, some of which were used to represent each branch of the government. The rest were placed on graves of local veterans. Our students said a few words in a short ceremony and then worked with members of our community to find the locations and to remember and honor our veterans. It was a beautiful event! We are hopeful that next year, we can do some fundraising and invite community members to sponsor a veteran so that we can give wreaths to all of them. Thank you to Mrs. Padgett and Mrs. Courtney for putting this event together. Also, thank you to our students, Jaxon Owen, Phoebe Valdez, Rein Hooten, Ella Graves, Taylor Randolph, and Uriah Valdez for serving your community in this way.

This week, school concludes for the first semester. Wednesday will be an early out at 2:45 p.m. and there will be no school on Thursday. We will return to school on Tuesday, January 9th. Because we are beginning on a Tuesday, we WILL have school that Friday, January 12th. Please take note of this since we do not usually have school on Fridays.

Have a great week!
