It is hard to believe that we are in our last six weeks of the school year! This time of year is so busy with spring sports, banquets, and other events, so it is important to mark your calendars for important dates.

• May 2nd is the senior supper at the Church of Christ.

• May 4th is the Algebra 1 EOC.

• May 5th is the senior ice cream supper at the Baptist Church and the Biology EOC.

• May 6th is the 8th grade Science STAAR and US History EOC.

• May 11th is the Math STAAR for grades 3-8.

• May 12th is the Reading STAAR for grades 3-8.

• May 13th is the 5th grade Science STAAR and the 8th grade Social Studies STAAR.

• May 20th is the Rotary banquet.

• May 27th is the prom for grades 9-12, as well as award ceremonies for all grade levels.

• May 28th is graduation.

Our golfers recently competed in the District meet. Christopher Watson placed 1st and Isaac Graves placed 2nd. Kora Berrio placed 2nd for the girls.

At the District tennis tournament, Gracie Perry and Kendall Johnson placed 2nd in doubles, and Kathy Shannon placed 2nd in singles. Our girls team won District. Both the golfers and tennis players will be competing at Regionals this week.

We also had several athletes competing at area track. Joey Bond placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash, 1st in shot put, and 1st in discus. He will advance to regionals in all three events. Kase Bordner placed 6th in the 800 meter run and 5th in the 3200 meter run. James Beck placed 4th in the 1600 meter run and 4th in the 3200 meter run. He will advance to Regionals in both events. Tristian Arkansas placed 1st in the 110 meter hurdles and will advance to Regionals. Isaac Graves placed 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles and will advance to Regionals. Weston Stiefel placed 4th in the shot put and 6th in the discus. He will advance in the shot put. Gunner Baugh placed 1st in the high jump and will advance to Regionals.

Our sprint relay team (Joey Bond, Gunner Baugh, Erick Miller and Tristian Arkansas) placed 3rd. Our 800 meter relay team (Joey Bond, Gave Morris, Erick Miller and Tristian Arkansas) placed 2nd. Both teams will advance to Regionals. The boys were District runners up.

For the girls, Raelyn West placed 1st in the 100 meter dash. Brissa Baugh placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash, 2nd in the high jump, and 3rd in the triple jump. Sydnie Bond placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash, 1st in the 300 meter hurdles, and 1st in the triple jump. Skyla Shannon placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles. Abigail Medrano placed 1st in the shot put and the discus. Maycie Shanklin placed 4th in the pole vault. These ladies are all advancing to Regionals.

Skylar Harris placed 5th in the 400 meter dash and 6th in the triple jump. Payton Duggan placed 6th in the 200 meter dash. Our sprint relay team (Raelyn West, Allie Berrio, Sydnie Bond and Brissa Baugh) placed 1st. Our 800 meter relay team (Raelyn West, Brissa Baugh, Allie Berrio and Skylar Harris) placed 1st. Both teams will advance to Regionals. In the mile relay, our team (Payton Duggan, Laci Wagner, Skylar Harris and Maycie Shanklin) placed 5th. Our girls won the Area track meet!

Not only are the Indians on fire athletically, they are also excelling academically! Cherokee took 15 Regional Qualifiers to the Regional academic UIL meet in Waxahachie on Saturday, April 17th, which resulted in four State Qualifiers and three sixth place medalists. Brissa Baugh placed 2nd in feature writing. Kendall Johnson placed 2nd in poetry interpretation. Another Cherokee participant placed 2nd in prose interpretation. Raelyn West placed 3rd in ready writing. These ladies will be advancing to state!

Abby Medrano placed 6th in copy editing. Kora Berrio placed 6th in editorial writing. Chloe Berrio placed 6th in prose interpretation. Other Regional participants were Wyatt Stotts, Curtis Parker, Gracie Perry, Kathy Shannon, Yaneiry Vega, Skyla Shannon, AJ Anderson and Maycie Shanklin.
