Happy Herman's Hideaway

Trying Times Call For Trying

Hi there my San Saba friends, how are you? I am still a sock stealing, chicken begging, trouble making dachshund, whining and dining dachshund who enjoys making life a challenge for my parentals. Isn’t it nice to know some things never change, not even in the midst of a crisis?

I would like to give San Saba and everyone involved in opening our new Lowe’s a standing ovation! Yes, I realize a standing ovation from a dachshund seems a small thing but hey, no short jokes, please…it comes from a huge heart! Dad was so happy to see everyone he gave them all hugs! I wasn’t kidding when I wrote last week that the people who work there are like family to us! So often humans say one doesn’t appreciate what we have until it is gone, but that isn’t the case in our house…we really love the small wonders in our life very much. We don’t have any family here, so we have created our own kind of family.

I happened to be doing research on old television shows and came across some things I would like to discuss. (I do such things on occasion) One such show was 21 Jump Street, and not to be obtuse, but did that show star 21 frogs, 21 kangaroos, 21 rabbits or 21 crickets? There was another show called Howdy Doody…was that a show about toilet training children? Furthermore, what was Magnum PI all about? What can a huge champagne bottle possibly do? Okay the last one I found confusing was The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin! That just sounds like the beat on a toy drum to me! I understand I am a dachshund living in a human world, but I have ears, am a writer, and have the capacity to understand the English language.

I was doing some reading and saw where America is considered a melting pot of cultures, histories, countries, religions and genetics. I asked mom about it, and she told me it was true. I asked her why then there was so much divisiveness, argument and hate in our country? She told me the funniest answer…”Herman, because we have all have the right to stew in our own juices, season them any way we feel fit, add anything we wish to our pot including poison!”

Our country is going through an unprecedented time, and it is overwhelming and difficult. For many there is a sense of loss, isolation, loneliness, anxiety and fear but here is the thing…all anyone can do is hope for the best, love with all their heart, live because they are here, laugh because they can and keep moving forward! I love you my San Saba friends, oh so very much! Thank you for being!
