Life is Always Right in Front of You
Hello there my San Saba dear ones! There is no way I can begin my column this week without talking about the great loss to our community…the fire and destruction of Lowe’s grocery store. Mom took me there many times and Barbara would come out from behind her register, hug on me, make such a fuss over me, Patty would greet me and Brenda would say…”Hello, Herman!” In a town like we have, a store is much more than just a place to buy things…it is like a second home, a place to gather with friends and family and so when they suffer so too do we. I know too that spirit of friendship and community will also bring a quick resolution to a temporary fix until Lowe's can rebuild. Our love and thoughts are with all of them.
Mom says I am suffering from spring fever and she feels that way because I am being my dachshund self but perhaps a tad more than usual. I have been roaming the hardwoods searching for things to steal, chew on I should not, whining at the back as if I want to go out because I want food from the kitchen when food service is shut down and generally being a dachshund pill! Do you know how irritating it is for dog parentals to get up a thousand times to let a dog out to avert an inside accident only to have said dog run in the opposite direction the minute that door is opened with a human standing with one foot out it? Um, well, have any of you heard any loud sighing? Could have come from my house! Now I know nothing of spring fever but I know a lot about being a dachshund and I am a wonderful example!
Mom turned old last Thursday, it is official. The morning of her birthday I was on the couch with her and I got in her face and I am sure she thought I was going to give her a birthday kiss but I licked the pouches under her eyes to see if they were full of money! Hey, I wasn’t being mean, they looked like purses! Dad had gone to the store earlier and bought Epsom salt and I asked him if that was mom’s birthday present? He said… ”No, this is for the rose bushes I bought, mom is salty enough.” Poor mom, we pick on her a lot but we wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world!
I have thought about so much since last we spoke my dear San Saba friends and the simple truth is we are lucky every moment we are given the privilege to live. There really is no bad luck, there is only opportunity to make life better, to do more, see things in a better light, be kinder, more understanding and have a deeper appreciation of what is in front of you than you did the moment before. I love you with all my heart and I hope you have a lovely week until next we speak. Thank you for being!
