On Saturday, June 1, 2024, a new Texas Historical Marker was dedicated to the life, times and memory of Edgar T. Neal. Located on the east side of the courthouse square, the program was under the direction of the San Saba County Historical Commission with Marker Chairman Jerry W. Blankenship as Master of ceremonies. Forty people were in attendance. County Judge Jody Fauley provided the opening remarks and welcome followed by the guest speakers for the day.
Representing the Grand Lodge of Texas, Jimmy R. Rumsey, Grand Senior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Texas, spoke on Neal’s Masonic membership and experiences. Joe R. Davis, Retired Texas Ranger representing the Former Texas Ranger Foundation, provided a background on Neal’s career as Sheriff and with the Ranger Service. Neal served as a Ranger at three separate times in his life and was one of the very few to make the transition from the old Frontier Battalion into the new reorganized Ranger force we know today. Michael Lee Cox, a former spokesman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), spoke to Neal’s accomplishments in conservation, the Walton League and his contributions as a commissioner in the Fish and Oyster Commission (now TPWD).
Following the dedication, a reception and fish fry was held at C S Farm hosted by Ross J. & Rosemary Cox, Sr. This is the third Texas Historical Subject Marker San Saba Lodge No. 612 has provided to the county.
