80 Years Ago August 12, 1943

Among the 113 students receiving bachelor's or master's degrees from Southwest Texas State Teachers College at the summer commencement exercises will be two San Saba county students, Mary Alice Gay, M. A., and Dorothy Burke, B. S., both of Cherokee.

Mr. and Mrs. John C. Alexander, who have had the Perry ranch in the southwestern part of the county leased for the past few years, are moving their livestock to another ranch near Sweetwater. Mrs. Alexander has been an active member of the San Saba Garden Club since she has been here.

Further encouragement to the proposed airfield for San Saba was given the past week when Sammie Waisman, a local boy who has made good, and is now a Brownwood merchant, came here in his plane, and discussed with members of the committee in charge of the work from the Junior Chamber of Commerce, advantages of a proposed site for the plane landing field. Waisman, who was accompanied by a flying instructor from Brownwood where the former is president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce was favorably impressed with the proposed site.

The Girls Service Organization here is sponsoring a group of entertainment features for the soldiers who are here from Camp Bowie under Second St. Luke in charge of the scrap metal drive in the county. Wednesday evening the soldiers were tendered a watermelon party at the city lake, while on Thursday evening there will be an invitation dance at the Shady Pause recreation center, three miles out, and during next week mothers of the Chappel community will honor the boys with a chicken supper on Cherokee Creek in the section.

E. H. Norris, who owns one of the best improved pecan orchards on the San Saba River, is of the opinion that the early summer floods in the river were of much benefit to the pecan crop along the stream, coming as they did at the fruiting seasons which is closely followed by the main growing season.

Two of the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brown of San Saba are home on furloughs. They are Sgt. Herman Brown of Brook Field, Florida, and Pvt. Ted Brown, Jr., of Palacios. The youngest son, Hugh Miller Brown, is also in service, but has not been home recently.

Joseph and Melanie Gibson and big brother Dawson are proud to announce the arrival of a baby girl, Savannah Jo Gibson. Savannah was born in Georgetown, Texas, August 8, 2003. She weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz. and was 19 in. long.

Miss Christine Bateman was honored with a gift coffee at the home of Mrs. Mikie Bishop. Christine is the bride-elect of Curtis Rainbolt. Receiving guests were the honoree, Karen Bateman, mother of the bride, and Judy Rainbolt, mother of the groom.

A white and cozy country home, adorned in red white & blue welcomed guests as Neil and Jo Alexander hosted a party. The occasion was especially held for the spouses and children of Ft. Hood in which their spouses and parents are currently serving in Iraq. TheAlexanders had some help hosting the event from some of Jo's co-workers and their staff as well.

Bill and Jo Anne Hardy honored their grandson, Russell Nicholas, with a fish fry at their home. Russell is a May graduate and scholarship recipient of Brownwood High School. Russell is the son of Randy and Darby Nicholas. He will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall and majoring in business and accounting.

The 2003-2004 San Saba Drill Team attended the Marching Auxiliary Camp. Members include Merideth Martin, Jacquelyn Vaughn, Courtney Cummins, Spencer Stewart, Cortney Hair, Meagan Smith, Amy Whitney, April Gibson, Laramie Robbins, Kali Lord, Kimi Smith, and Tabitha Berryhill. Macy's Day Parade Qualifiers were Merideth Martin and Jacquelyn Vaughn. All Americans were Merideth Martin, Jacquelyn Vaughn. Kimi Smith, Meagan Smith, Amy Whitney, Cortney Hair, Kali Lord, and Laramie Robbins.

Julie Gates of San Saba performed at the United Way of the Concho Valley's first Star Search San Angelo. Thirty-four people sent in audition tapes and 12, including Julie, were chosen to sing in the show. She was the only one chosen from outside of that area. Julie finished third, singing an original song, 'Light In The Shadows'. Her prizes were a trophy, two hours recording time at Red Lantern Studios of SanAngelo, and the opportunity to sing for at least one and possibly two more events for the United Way.
