50 Years Ago June 28, 1973

George Dennis, San Saba High School Science teacher has been named among the Outstanding Secondary Educators of America for 1973 on the basis of his professional and civic achievements. Outstanding Secondary Educators of America is an annual awards program honoring distinguished young men and women for their exceptional services, achievements and leadership in the field of secondary education.

There were two babies born at San Saba Memorial Hospital from June 18 to June 25. Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Walker are the parents of Marci LaRae, eight pounds, five ounces, born June 21. Mr. and Mrs. Refugio Maldonado are the parents of Juan Manuel, four pounds, five ounces, born June 20.

Sgt. David G. Linzey, formerly of San Saba who is stationed at Udorn AFB in Thailand, has recently been involved in the Southeast Asia Talent contest involving nine countries. The USO Club at Udorn sponsored Linzey and his band for a trip to Utapoe AFB, Thailand. The band won first place there and went on to Clark AFB in the Philippines, as representative for Thailand.

Mr. and Mrs. Mance Randolph received word of a new granddaughter, Traci Suzanne Rhoades, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rhoades. Mrs. Randolph left Friday to visit with them a few days and Mr. Randolph visited them Sunday.

Workers have prepared the foundation for a new building at the Cherokee Home for Children. The new 10 x 10 Service Building will provide new offices, cold storage and cooling vaults, beauty and barbershop combinations, storage space for food, clothing, a meat processing room and a sewingcooking room for use of the Home Demonstration Agent. Present offices will be used for relief house parents, according to Hilly Walker, manager.

30 Years Ago June 24, 1993

The 'Make My Day Girls' sporting Clays team were Rita Boultinghouse, May Courtion and Sherry McNutt of Mountain Home and Linda Boden of Lakewood, Co., won the team championship at the Denver Ladies Charity Classic in Denver, Colorado.

Sam and Sue Williams spent the weekend in San Antonio enjoying Sea World and other points of interest. Sue also picked up her sister Linda at the airport and after a visit she drove Linda to her home in Austin.

Tanner and Mildred Faris traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend the Coast Guard Reunion of the USS General George M. Randall. Tanner had served on this ship during World War II. The union was for all personnel that had served on this ship. They enjoyed 10 days of travel and fun.

Miss Kit Smith, fourteen year old daughter of Tooter and Carroll Smith, was crowned 1993 San Saba County Chamber of Commerce Rodeo Queen, by Miss Leslie Hamrick, 1992 Rodeo Queen, at the rodeo on Friday. Kit is the granddaughter of Hogg and Helen Jones and Milton and Dell Smith of Rocksprings, Texas.

Travis Ringo won first place in the championship flight at the Pan American Junior Golf Classic held in Austin at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in June. He competed against 20 other 9 and 10 year old boys from around central Texas and one from Pennsylvania. They played nine hole each day, and Travis' score was 118 for the three days, 4 strokes under the second place score. Travis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Ringo.
