60 Years Ago March 14, 1963

The judges of the San Saba Garden Club Yard-of-the-Month program awarded the plaque to Mrs. W. S. Pence for the month of March, according to Mrs. R. C. Felts of the club.

Mr. and Mrs. Archie Riggs of San Saba are the parents of Robert Lee, six pounds and 10 ounces, born March 5 in the San Saba Memorial Hospital. This is the couple's first child. Mrs. Riggs is the former Judy Marie Williams.

Newest newcomers to town are Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Groves, and son, J. W., 13, coming from Lampasas. Anative of Lampasas, he served two years in the Army, stationed at Fort Hood. He is employed with the TAA Inc., (rock proccessing plant). She is the former Leota Squires of Brady. They are Baptists.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown, Margie, Pete and Ginger visited Abilene during the weekend with her sisters and families, Mr. and Mrs. James Poe and children and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Lane and family.

A total of six high school girls of Richland Springs walked 34 miles to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Porch in Cherokee. The girls including Gail Garrett, Donna Adams, Judy McKinnerney, Georgie Adams, Patty Pearce and Edith Barina, got up early and began their 34-mile hike. They arrived at the Porch home making the trip in about 11 hours. The girls were thirsty, hungry and tired. Mrs. Porch prepared a delicious supper for them. The girls spent the night at the Porch home and returned home by way of car.

A cool front moved across the county bringing spotted showers to part of the county. Mrs. Robert Lewis reported 1.10 inches of rain at Richland Springs with high winds and some hail, however no damage. Miss Lillie Carroll of Lakeview stated that a chicken house was unroofed at the Bert Martin place and there also was damage to their barn due to the strong wind. Rain measured about 1.00 inch.

20 Years Ago March 17, 2003

A birthday party will be given for Pearl Cantrell for her 95th Birthday at the old Lakeview school.

Jim and Kristy Hooten are proud to announce the birth of their son, Kolton Kirk Hooten. Kolten was born February 2, 2003. He weighed 8 lbs., 5.5 oz. and was 20 inches long. He was welcomed home by his big sister, Bailey Nicole, age 4.

2003 marks the 30th Anniversary of Super S Foods and this will be a banner year for the company and it's customers. Since day one, the supermarket's business plan has been guided by a simple philosophy: 'The key to business success is providing total customer service.' Thirty years later, Super S Foods has grown to become one of the largest chains of independent supermarkets in the state of Texas, by doing exactly that.

A great job goes to the Richland Springs 2nd - 5th grade classes who read a total of 605 books for the monthly accelerated Readers Contest. Congratulations to the winners of the Accelerated Readers Contest which was Mrs. Larremore's 2nd grade class with a total of 162 books. As promised they received a pizza party along with coke for their hard work. These kids are so competitive and are outstanding students. Mrs. Larremore's class include Brooklyn McGinty, Stanley Buttler, Cheyenne Tharp, Katelynn Teel, Ramy Wood, Michael Miller Jr., Leon Gilmore, Michael McKinnerney, Chance Bush, and Thomas Fowler.

Mr. and Mrs. Billie L. Cates celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in Cherokee, TX. The couple have three children: Vicky and Larry of Austin, TX, Dewayne of Waco, TX, and eight grandchildren, four great grand children. Mrs. Cates is the former Dorothy A. Simon. Billie and Dorothy make their home in Pontotoc, TX.

Kara Dawson receives a $100.00 donation from The Rotary Club of San Saba following her presentation concerning the U.S. Space Academy. Her presentation is available to any interested parties. All donations will be used for Kara's enrollment in the Advanced Space Academy. She will receive college credit for her participation.
