50 Years Ago January 25, 1973

A Hereford steer named Champ, weighing 1125 pounds, shown by Jo Nell Epperson, San Saba FFA member, took grand champion honors of the 42nd annual San Saba County Livestock Show. Robbie Broyles, a Cherokee 4-H member, won reserve champion honors of the show with a Charolais Cross steer named Jeremiah, weighing 1125 pounds.

The several days of warm temperatures and sunshine were marred early Saturday evening when a dark cloud formed across the west and spawned a twister that skipped across a considerable area west and north of town. The storm hit the local area with some light hail, then a few large hailstones, some light rain and strong wind, however, no damages have been reported in the city.

Connie McKinnerney showed the champion gilt in the 42nd annual San Saba County Livestock Show, and her brother, Ricky McKinnerney took top honors in the crossbred and purebred barrow divisions.

A total of 26 golfers let the wind turn them into 'goofers' in the mixed Best Ball contest. The golfers started out trying to hit the ball, then dodge it when the wind blew it back to them. Winners of the event was the team of Doug Harkey, including Harkey, Dean Bagley, Archie Jackson and Annie Mae McCarty.

Billy Clyde Bush of Richland Springs completed degree requirements during the fall semester at Sul Ross State University and will receive the bachelor of science degree in range animal science in May.

30 Years Ago January 28, 1993 The annual San Saba County 4-H Rabbit Show was a success. Miss Brandy Blossman's buck won the highest award as the Grand Champion Buck while Miss Candice Doyle's doe won Grand Champion Doe.

Edward H. Jones from Cherokee graduated from Sul Ross State University during fall commencement in December. He received a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology.

Amy Vanessa Smith, a San Saba student at Angelo State University, received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Early Childhood.

A clock plaque was awarded to Mary Stewart by the North San Saba Water Supply for 22 years of dedicated service. She was on the committee to form the NSSWS and was a charter director.

The undefeated Armadillos (6-0 in district) took charge of their future in the first quarter of the Cisco game with an impressive win. James McNeely had a personal record of 31 points in the game to lead the Dillos to the 6-0 mark in District 8-AA play followed by John Bauer 28, Chris Davenport 11, Jason Tilson 6, Kyle Beam 4, and Jacob Cabrera 1.

The San Saba City Council officially began the renovation of Mill Pond Park with the hiring of surveyor George Amthor III and architect Larry Travis.

History repeats itself. Last January 1, 1993 Sam Oatman was sworn in as District Attorney for the 33rd Judicial District. His grandfather, Wilburn Oatman, took this same oath ad District Attorney for this Judicial District January 3, 1900. The District now is comprised of five counties: Blanco, Burnet, Llano, Mason and San Saba. In 1900 there were two additional counties: Mills and Menard. Oatman says the only changes other than the number of counties is that he travels to each county by car, whereas 'Grandpa' had to go by horse and buggy.
