50 Years Ago October 12, 1972

Jimmy Walker, son of Mrs. Dorothy Walker Blair, was chosen by the senior class as the senior Rotary visitor for the month of October. He is active in football, basketball and track. He is a co-captain of the Armadillo football team this year. He also has been active in FFA work.

Ricky McKinnerney, Mr. RSHS, and Gayle Johnson, Miss RSHS, were elected at Richland Springs High School when the Student Council met. Other outstanding personalities named were Joe Hardman and Velita Bates, 'most likely to succeed'; Perry Patrick, 'most friendly boy', and Brenda Patrick, 'most friendly girl.'

Mr. and Mrs. Murray Evans and son, Dan, of Arlington were weekend guests of her mother, Mrs. Inez Garrett.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Little and Chuck spent the weekend in Barnhart with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Elkins and Mark. They helped Mark celebrate his first birthday.

There were two babies born at San Saba Memorial Hospital from Oct. 2 to Oct. 9. Mr. and Mrs. Carl May are parents of Allen Eugene, seven pounds, four ounces, born Oct. 3. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Lynn Burton are parents of Dwayne LeRoy, ten pounds, one ounce, born Oct. 4.

It was announced at the recent San Saba County Chamber of Commerce meeting that the new Christmas decorations have arrived and will be ready to put up in November. The volunteer firemen will put the decorations up along the streets and local clubs will decorate the courthouse lawn and Santa's house. Bill Kirkpatrick reported for the rodeo committee and said they are still trying to find land for an arena.

At Fleming Cemetery located on Canyon Ranch in Sloan community is a small burial plot, established by early-day settlers, the John M. and T. E. Flemings. Only two markers can be found in the cemetery now.

The San Saba High School Spanish Club met to elect officers. Officers include Scotty Woodward, president; Richard Zapata, vice president; Irene Martinez, secretary; Carla Reid, reporter; Harvey Torres, song leader. Sulema Martinez was named chairman of the program committee and Steve Martin, chairman of game committee.

30 Years Ago October 15, 1992 Laura Shook, daughter of Jimmy and Nancy Shook, was named San Saba High School Homecoming Queen for 1992. Laura was awarded the crown from Kristen Childress, the 1991 Homecoming Queen.

San Saba Lady Dillos put themselves in position to make a run at the District Championship in Cross Country. With Ricci Griimes running a school record time of 12:46, the Lady Dillos won the Goldthwaite Cross Country meet. Joining Ricci (6th) in the top 15 finishers were Sara Ragsdale 11th (13:36), Heather Hardman, 13th (13:41), and Christi Carter 15th (13:45).

The Wallace Creek Club House was the scene of Louella Presley's 97th birthday celebration. Approximately 65 people registered, coming from California to different parts of Texas.

W. R. and Inez Martin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on October 17 at a reception to be held in their honor at the Bowser Community Church, Bowser, Texas.

In a candlelight ceremony held in the afternoon at the First United Methodist Church in San Saba, Marcie Oliver and Reagan Maxcey were united in marriage with Reverend John Reynolds officiating.

San Saba's 8th Dillos had to wait a year to get revenge, but revenge they got by defeating the Goldthwaite Eagles by a score of 18-6 in a hard fought contest at Rogan Field. The Eagles defeated the Dillos last year 20-14. It was the Dillos only loss last year as 7th graders. The Eagles had never lost until this game.
