THE PAST REVISITED–The year was 1910 when this baseball team played in San Saba County. The CJC insignia was that of Cherokee Junior College and our thanks goes to Clyde Estep of Goldthwaite for permission to print the picture. Cherokee College was founded in 1889 and closed about the time of World War I and is presently the Cherokee Independent School System.

July 11, 1974

Jerry Bethell San Saba Assistant coach to John Baskin the past four years has submitted his resignation and has accepted a coaching position at Llano High School according to Milton Thompson, San Saba Athletic Director. He will join John Baskin who will also be a Llano coach assisting Ken Gray, Llano Athletic Director.

Bert House of Paducah visited during the July 4 holiday with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer House.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Maultsby of Duncanville and his mother, Mrs. Dora Maultsby, recently spent a week's vacation at Lake Buchanan and visited Mr. and Mrs. Guy Franklin.

Anchorage, Alaska-Airman First Class Sammy D. Ethridge, son of Mrs. Sarah N. Bates of Cherokee Route, has arrived for duty at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Airman Ethridge, a helicopter mechanic assigned to a unity of the Alaskan Air Command, previously served at Loring AFB, Maine. He is a 1972 graduate of San Saba High School.

Judge Harvy Reeves, San Saba Justice of the Peace, revealed the new location of the Justice of the Peace sign is still on the ground floor of the San Saba Courthouse. Now instead of turning left at the first door you turn right at the second door. Judge Reeves swapped offices with the Parks and Wildlife Department.

The combination of one ground wire, one primary wire and a careless sparrow destroyed two resistors and cut off electric power to residents west of San Saba including Richland Springs shortly after 6 p.m. Monday. The outage lasted about an hour as Wendell Till, McCulloch County Coop employee repaired the ground wire. The sparrow fell in flames and started a grass fire which was extinguished by the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department.

The San Saba Jr. High Cheerleaders recently returned from a National Cheerleaders Association Summer Camp Workshop where they received the NCA "Top Team" award, the "Safety First Award", the "Spirit Stick", the "T.E.A.M." (Together Everyone Achieves Miracles) award, and the most prestigious award of all, the "Team Megaphone" award. Team members include: Kassandra Cantu, Christina Gonzales, Rikki Ferrell, Cynthia Jimenez, Brandy Hyatt, and Marsiela Miller.

Albert Spears, Jr. and son, Chase, caught a 20 pound yellowcat in the San Saba River on a trotline baited with perch.

Mike Wise and his family from Bellville were in Cherokee over the weekend at their ranch there. The Wise family was returning from a vacation trip to Kentucky.

Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Reyes celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. The children and grandchildren planned a barbecue dinner at Risien Park. Jesus Reyes and Celia Calderon were married July 15, 1944 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in San Saba. Children of the couple are Olivia Valles of Lampasas, Alex Reyes of Richland Springs, Olga Cantu and Oleta Behrens, both of San Saba.

Raymond Ellis celebrated his 90th birthday at the ranch home of Chad, Kathy and Seth Oliver. His daughters, Rayma Lee Johnson, Gayle Stewardson, and Kathy Oliver hosted the occasion. Chad Oliver, Ward Stewardson, and Wade Ellis prepared the barbecue supper with all the trimmings.

Christina Gonzales, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gonzales, is a member of the San Saba Jr. High Cheerleading squad. She received top recognition for being selected to the National Cheerleaders Association All-American Team.
