70 Years Ago

April 17, 1952

Only one birth was reported at the San Saba Memorial Hospital this past week. A boy, Bruce Wayne, was born April 9 to Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Harkey. He weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces.

Scott Benson, 8-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Benson of San Saba, was named grand prize winner in the Easter Coloring Contest sponsored by local merchants and will be presented a $25 Defence Bond today by Clay Kuykendall, president of the City National Bank.

Steve Ballew, sheet metal worker and plumber in San Saba for more than 40 years, has opened a shop in the building recently constructed northwest of Sullivan Lumber Co.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bradley visited in Evant with relatives over the weekend.

Miss Carol Jean Millican of Southwestern University spent the weekend in the home of her mother, Mrs. Virgie Millican.

Top ranking sweetheart contestants in the San Saba District of Future Farmers of America appeared at a district banquet in Brady. Gayle Dean Ellis of San Saba was chosen sweetheart of the district, and will enter competition for area honors. Runners up were Barbara Gandy of Eden, third place; and Lynetta Erwin of Eola, second place.

The senior class of San Saba High School will present "Demon in the Dark," a mystery and comedy in three acts, at the school gymnasium. Leading roles will be played by Clifford Wilson, Peggy DeVoll, Douglas Adams and Rayma Lee Ellis, with supporting cast composed of Lige Ann Miller, Marie Townsend, John McNair, Bobby Joe Perry, Lovell Dickison, Jerry Reavis and Patsy Alexander.

Mothers and fathers of some 180 San Saba county children will have the opportunity to see their kiddies on the screen, Wayne Horton, manager of the Palace Theatre, said. A special showing of the local children will be featured in addition to the regular picture schedule. Pictures of the San Saba kiddies were made several months ago by a Hollywood portrait photographer for the special showing.

50 Years Ago

April 13, 1972

Miss Lucy Rector celebrated her 86th birthday in the San Saba Nursing Home April 8. Many of her personal friends came and enjoyed the opening of her gifts and refreshments of ice cream, cake and punch. Miss Rector is a retired school teacher who taught many years in San Saba schools.

Mrs. R. H. Henniger of Bend was honored on her 86th birthday April 5. Her granddaughter, Mrs. William Clark, made the birthday cake.

The San Saba 4-H Horse Club met to elect officers for the coming year. Officers elected include Trey Kirkpatrick, president; Charley Kuykendall, vice president; Suzette Vann, secretary; Angie Kirkpatrick, Council delegate; and Kerry Lively, reporter.

Freeman Dacus received the $100 Dollar Day bonus for May. Harry's Fabric Shop is where the lucky coupon was deposited. Jean Sowers, manager of the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce, said she picked up about the usual number of coupons and most of the merchants with whom she had talked, said they had another successful Dollar Day. Dacus is custodian of the courthouse.

The Catholic Youth Organization held a spring dance Saturday, when a Spring Queen was crowned. The nominees who sold the most raffle tickets were chosen, including Martha Botello, princess; Mary Perez, queen; and Virginia Campos, duchess. The queen was escorted by Erasmo Salinas. The winners of the prizes were Lindy Cooksey, a Bible; Gilbert Garza, radio, and Fernando Blanco, coffee percolator.

Three members of the San Saba Garden Club, Mrs. Forest Dickison, Mrs. J. C. Guyton Jr., president of the club, and Mrs. Eli Rawls were setting plants in the planter box holding the community Bulletin Sign on the north side of the courthouse. They planted dwarf box elders, purchased by San Saba County Chamber of Commerce; periwinkles and geraniums, donated by Mrs. Emit Peavy of The Rose Shop, and Mrs. Guyton.
