100 Years Ago

November 17, 1921

Little Miss Julia Callahan entertained in honor of her tenth birthday anniversary Thursday afternoon at the home of her grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sorrell. Thirty-two guests assembled to make merry throughout the afternoon. The usual program of cutting the cake and finding the ring and things took place and then the cake was enjoyed with other refreshments. Everybody was glad they went and wish for Miss Julia many returns of the day.

R. P. Edgerton was the lucky man to draw the years subscription to the San Saba Star. Here is hoping that he will get much joy out of it as a small boy gets out of a little red wagon.

Mr. and Mrs. Reeves Kuykendall visited in Cherokee this week.

Dick Miller left Monday for Fredericksburg to assume the duties of county agent for Gillespie county. Dick is a graduate of A. & M. college and will be able to show the old pioneers how to farm on a scientific basis. The Star congratulates the citizens of that county on securing such an able and energetic man as their county agent.

Miss Letitia Shelton, of the Howard Payne college spent the week end with Mrs. S. J. Howard.

Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Keyser, are the proud parents of a new son.

DINNER AT THE COURT HOUSE NOVEMBER 22. The following Menu will be served: Fried Chicken, Cream Gravy, Hot Biscuits, Mashed Potatoes, English Peas, Cranberry Sauce, Pecan Pie, Coffee. This dinner will be served by the Ladies Aid Society of the First Presbyterian Church. Price of the dinner, 50 cents.

A Bazaar and turkey dinner will be given by the ladies of the Baptist church in the basement of the Courthouse, Dec. 10.

C. F. Lehmann, a representative of the Mergenthaler Linotype Company was here this week in the interest of placing a Model 14 in the Star office. Subscribe to the Star, only $1.00 during November.

Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Chamberlain from Denver City paid the W. T. Crawfords a four-day visit last week. They have been good friends for a long time.

Yvonne and Bruno Contreras, Jr. of Odessa are proud to announce the arrival of their daughter, Mercedes Yvette. She was born Sunday, Sept. 29, at 8:07 p.m. in Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Yvette weighed 7 lbs. and measured 19 in.

Joe Ellis III, 9, got his 8-point buck on opening day of hunting season sitting his mom's knee in the top of an Oak tree. The buck was killed on the Joe and Lucille Ellis Ranch. He is the son of Patsy and Joe Ellis Jr. and is in the fourth grade. Armed with a .222 rifle he also wore his grandfather's cap for good measure.

Steve Burnett of San Saba recently went on a hunting trip to the Uncomphgre Plateau located between Norwood and Montrose, Colorado. The massive Elk field dressed at 400 pounds. Burnett was hunting with a black powder rifle in a heavy wooded area when the Elk stepped into a clearing and he was able to get a shot away.

A Dalmatian named Sabaka helped Head Start children in San Saba to learn about fire prevention and what to do in case of fire. Shane Altizer, assisted by Cindy Kneese, had Sabaka show how to crawl on the floor to an exit, check the door to see if it is warm before opening. Just one of several safety factors to remember.

The King and Queen and the Prince and Princess of the annual Richland Springs Fall Festival were crowned last Saturday night during the festival. The King was Joseph Gibson and the Queen was Shelly Dempsey, both are 7th graders. The Princess was Toni Jo Roberds and the Prince was Jacob Dempsey.

San Saba Pecan had its Grand Opening at their new location in downtown San Saba next to Harry's Department Store. Visitors were treated to refreshments which included tasty pecan treats. The new store is open week days selling pecans retail or wholesale, in shell, shelled or cracked in addition to gift items.
