Two Texas-raised California egg plants were presented to the News publisher recently by the T. M. Sofges, who raised them on their farm at Locker. A deep purple in color, the egy plants measured about 15 inches around, the short way.

Dick Felts, who arrived in San Saba Friday following a tour of duty in England with the armed forces, took over his duties that afternoon as assistant football coach and has been assigned teaching duties in the local schools. He is to teach one period in the seventh grade, teach two world history classes and a general mathematics course. Felts is the son of Dr. and Mrs. R. C. Felts of San Saba.

From the Live Oak community to their new home in San Saba are Mr. and Mrs. C. Earl McKee and Robert, 14. She is the former Inez Boyd of Brownwood, teacher of first grade in the school here. McKee is employed with the Texaco Company. They will worship at the Church of Christ.

Ryst Hendricks, new band director for the San Saba schools, arrived in San Saba last week and is beginning to shape the band for its first public appearance at the San Saba-Brady football game. Hendricks has 14 years experience as a band director.

The Church of Christ in San Saba recently bought a 5-room house and corner lot just across the street east of the church building and facing on Wallace. Part of the lot will be used as a parking area, and three of the house will be used as classrooms.

Thomas Bowden is at it again! Last year Thomas' Sears gilt farrowed 8 pigs. One pig died the day the County Agent weighed them. With his 7 pigs he won third place in the litter weight contest, with the first place edging him out by only 43 pounds with 11 pigs compared to his 7 pigs. The 7 pigs averaged 62 pounds at 8 weeks! Watch out boys! Thomas' sow has 13 pigs. Between Thomas and the sow they are doing a beautiful job.

For the second year is a row Ward Ellis Sr. has brought the first San Saba pecans in to the office of The News & Star. Once again they came from the Sloan Community and were picked up on Sept. 2. Last year Ellis brought the first pecans on Aug. 29.

There was one baby born at San Saba Memorial Hospital from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Shook are parents of a daughter, Laura Ann, six pounds, 14 ounces, born Aug. 31.

A television news special will be shown on San Saba, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 2 in Houston. It will include Mill Pond Park, waterfall, Mill House, Museum, Senior Citizen's Nutcracker band and interviews with Mrs. Charles Miffleton and Leon Lane. Jon Denny, who conducted the interview indicated he would return in the fall to cover the annual Pecan Festival.

San Saba Game Wardens want to remind all dove hunters that it is against the law to shoot doves from any vehicle because a dove is a migratory bird. Apparently some have forgotten and some have been fined. "It's okay for quail or turkey," commented Jim Havel, "but not any migratory bird such as doves, ducks, geese, etc."

Graciela Ramon was among 75 candidates receiving degrees from Hardin Simmons University during exercises held in Behrens Chapel at Abilene Aug.15. She is the daughter of Mrs. Elida Ramon of San Saba and Andres Ramon of Leon, Okla. Miss Ramon is a 1971 graduate of San Saba High School. Among those attending the graduation were Mrs. Elida Ramon and Mrs. Jose Jimenez of San Saba; Moses Ramon, Maria B. Martinez, Mr. and Mrs. Jaime Jimenez and family of Stephenville; and Andres Ramon of Leon, Okla.

Lt. Col. and Mrs. William P. (Bill) Leftwich are at home after their honeymoon to the "four corners" area of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. They were married Aug. 20 in the parsonage of First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lee R. Geldmeier officiating. The bride is the former Mrs. Mattie Edwards of San Saba. Leftwich was retired from the Air Force and has made his home in San Saba for the past year.
