A social honoring Miss Azalee Edmondson is being planned by the Distaff Study Club, at which time formal announcement of her winning the club's $200 scholarship award will be made, club members said this week. Miss Edmondson, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Edmondson of the Spring Creek community, plans to enroll this fall at Tarleton College in Stephenville.
Rainfall varying from onehalf to 4 1/4 inches blanketed most of San Saba county Sunday afternoon relieving near-drouth conditions and breaking a heat wave which sent the mercury to 107 degrees in San Saba on one occasion during the later part of July. Residents in the China Creek section reported the heaviest rainfall, 4.25 inches. San Saba recorded two inches.
San Saba All-Stars split a double-header Saturday night with the Bertram All-Stars, winning the opener 1-0 and losing the second game 3-4.

Two San Sabans, Morris E. Vogel and Haskell J. Brown Jr., have enlisted to serve as paratroopers with the 11th Airborne Division which is now stationed in the Far East Command. Both are graduates of San Saba High School. Vogel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vogel of San Saba, and Brown is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Haskell J. Brown Sr. of San Saba.
Harry Shapiro has received an invitation from Radio Station KTSA in San Antonio to appear as a selected panel of six representative merchants in Texas during Fall Market Week in San Antonio. Shapiro will be accompanied to San Antonio by his wife and Mr. and Mrs. George Horton Jr.

George R. McHorse, of San Saba is among four hundred and four students at The University of South Dakota, who are candidates for graduation at the universities 59th summer commencement exercises Aug. 4th. McHorse will graduate a Bachelor of Business degree (M.B.A.).
Rayna Gossett, daughter of Wayne and Valerie Gossett of Richland Springs was named All Around Cowgirl at the Lometa FFA Rodeo. The eleven year old sixth grade student was presented with a beautiful silver and gold belt buckle inscribed, "All Around Cowgirl". She also won the Pole Bending and Calf Roping event and received belt buckles for her efforts in those categories. Rayna competed with her horse, Nellie.
Kelli Whitley, a San Saba County 4-H member from Cherokee, daughter of Farrel and Michelle Whitley was a Senior Division First Place winner in the 18-county Fashion Show held July 24-25. Kelli is among eight award winning teenagers participating in the Fashion Show, who will advance to statewide competition in Corpus Christi this month as a part of an annual 4-H Youth Program sponsored by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
Cherokee is losing a special family, Allen and Cassie Nelson and children, Brodie and Cuatro Nelson, are being transferred to Comanche County. Allen is the County Supervisor for Farmers Home Administration, and his favorite job, Rodeo Clown Bullfighter. Cuatro, their twenty-five month old son, appears with Allen as the "Little Clown".
San Saba High School drill team members participated in a three day camp at the high school cafetorium. Team members included Chantay Ferrell, Charla Beam, Stephanie Sloan, Amy Garza, Kimberly Ellis, Gina Maglietta, Lee Ann, Byrd, Traci McGehee, Laura Scott, Shawna Franklin, Kristi Anderson, Robin Arfsten and Laura Baxter.
Clay Cowley of Cherokee and a student at Southwest Texas State University participated in the Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) program since early June. Work sites on the Southwest Texas State University campus in San Marcos where more than 100 high school students participated ranged from administrative offices to the child development center.
