70 Years Ago June 14, 1951

With the interest shown, the Home Makers will continue to sell during the month of June at San Saba Butane Co.; but if no permanent location is found by that time, they will not be able to continue with their sales, according to Mrs. Bernice Murray, county home demonstration agent.

The San Saba Memorial Hospital reports one birth this week to Mr. and Mrs. Alvis Longley, a girl, Patsy Lea, born June 8, at 6:30 a.m., weighing 7 lbs. 1 oz.

Sloan–The election held here Saturday to vote for or against the county issuing $125,000 bonds to build farm-to-market surfaced roads was seemingly of little interest to our people. Only twelve votes were polled and all but one of them were cast in favor of the bonds.

Dollar Day in San Saba, Wednesday drew good crowds of shoppers, with several merchants reporting much better results than the first Dollar Day in May. Several expressed the opinion that even better crowds would have been drawn had it not been for the fact that many rural customers probably postponed coming to town one day in order to do their shopping and see the rodeo parade on the same day.

A new cafe, specializing in Spanish foods and catering to the general public, was opened last weekend by Marceleno Calderon. The cafe is located in the former Moore Pecan House building near the San Saba cotton yard, and has undergone an extensive remodeling program. Further remodeling work is planned in the near future, Calderon said. Employees include Jesus Gonzales, cook; Angelina Calderon and Leona Reyes.

Miss Bernice Sanderson, who teaches in Houston, arrived in San Saba this week, where she will spend the summer with her mother, Mrs. U. M. Sanderson.

Gilbert Menchaca Jr., aviation machinist's mate third class, who has served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, signed up this month for an additional six-year "hitch," according to information received from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Menchaca Sr. He is now stationed at Seattle, Wash.

30 Years Ago June 20, 1991

Three San Saba County residents are among the 1,502 students whose 1991 spring semester grades earned them places on the dean's list at Southwest Texas State University. Earning honors from San Saba were Reyna Caracheo, Cheri L. Grumbles and Dana G. Rivers.

Betty Jo Miller of San Saba has been appointed to the Lower Colorado River Authority Board of Directors to complete the term of her late husband, Judge Jack B. Miller. Governor Ann Richards announced the appointment June 7, stating that Ms. Miller "will be an outstanding addition to this important board."

The oath of office for Cherokee's new Postmaster was given to Roland Hawkins by MSC Manager/Postmaster Ben Jasek of Fort Worth, in a brief ceremony held last Friday in front of the new Post Office. Following the ceremony all in attendance were treated to punch and cookies.

Marsha Crenwelge, Nicole Millican, Kevin Shahan, and Scott Carter all students of San Saba ISD won awards for essays written in a contest sponsored by the McCulloch Electric Cooperative, Inc. Making the presentation was Hilton Hayes. First place winners received an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Harry's Inc. has donated bright orange coveralls for the San Saba EMS Emergency crews that will be operating the Jaws of Life. The donation is made in the name of Darel T. Terry.

The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce float won second place in the annual Llano Rodeo Parade for out-of-town floats. Lampasas won first place. Accenting the beauty of Mill Pond Park and the Pecan Capital of the World was Stephanie Ellis, Emily Harkey, Dani Todd, Sammi Jo Phillips and Elyse Beaver.
