81 Years Ago June 7, 1945

Ward Ellis was out with his combine harvesting George Taylor's oats. Some say that grasshoppers are eating up their oats.

We want to congratulate our Commissioner, E. M. Scott, for his thoughtfulness in fixing the road from the public road to the church building at Bend and spreading gravel thereon. Mr. Scott repeats the courtesies don by out friend, Floyd McRorey, while he was among the City Dads.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cochran attended graduation exercises at Howard Payne College at Brownwood. Their son in law, J. C. Wade graduated.

The Bob Taylors, Mrs. Daisy Hickman and the Sammie Hickmans of Locker, attended graduation exercises at Lubbock in which Miss Ann Dean Hickman graduated.

A nickel at a time a juke box in the Liberty Cafe here took in $1,568 last year, says A. O. Barker, owner of the cafe, who keeps figures on the machine. Barker's share was $784. Barker says Texas' favorite, Bob Wills, probably catches the most nickels.

60 Years Ago June 2, 1966

Jesse Robbins, son of Mrs. Frances Robbins, was among students at Schreiner Institute, Kerrville, who received awards made at the final chapel program . Robbins, a graduate of San Saba High School, received silver keys for one year on the staff for work on the school paper.

The ladies of Bend-Chappel have organized a softball team. Members include Mmes. Baxter Lively, Buddie Ray Priest, W. E. Lively, Elsy Dean Henniger, J. L. McCoury, Mrs. Archie Lively and Trudy, Mebbie and Debbie Lively.

Principal Leon Lane has announced that five students in San Saba Junior High School made straight A's all year, entitling them to be on the Year Honor roll. The five students include Melinda Farley and William (Bill) Jones, Sixth Grade; and Gayle Locker, Kathy Shahan and Pauline Calhoon of the Eighth Grade.

Connie Bagley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bagley, was elected Area VII FFA Sweetheart at the 12th Annual Convention of the Area VII FFA Association. Miss Bagley, a 1966 graduate of San Saba High School, won the honor over six other Chapter Sweethearts in the area and will represent Area VII in the State Contest.

'I started in business with my final pay from the Army and a lot of faith,' says one of San Saba's newtimer operators here. This man who goes like a house on fire, entered business little more than a year ago. He is Lawrence G. (Larry) Shivener of Larry's Gulf Service. He goes to work around six in the morning, and closes up for the night between nine and ten o'clock. Then he may answer a few road calls for help for an empty gas tank after he falls into bed.
