60 Years Ago April 21, 1966

Announcement of the engagement of Miss Loy Nell Byrd and Thomas Arnold Behrens has been made by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Byrd of Bend. The future bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Behrens.

There were two babies born at San Saba Memorial Hospital: Mr. and Mrs. John Parker are the parents of John Byron, six pounds, two ounces, born April 11. Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Reyes Jr. are the parents of Ernestina, seven pounds, two ounces, born April 12.

Richland Springs Coyotes dethroned host Lometa as the District 34B track champions April 15, as Garland Hardman scored four first places.

Bill Tidwell, assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 55, Boy Scouts and Weldon Nesbitt, Life Scout, attended the Order of Arrow summer encampment at Camp Billy Gibbons. Both Tidwell and Nesbitt advanced to the rank of Brotherhood. Nesbitt was named Lodge Chief for San Saba.

Sp/6 Frank B. Shaw Jr. returned from a 13-month tour of overseas duty with the armed forces. He was stationed at Ascom City, Korea with the 6th Medical Depot. Following a 39-day leave he and his wife and children will move to Washington for his new assignment.

40 Years Ago April 24, 1986

The San Saba High School Armadillo baseball team won their first district game, since beginning baseball three years ago, on their home field against Junction. The Dillos defeated the Eagles 5-0 in the first district game of the season.

Steve McGill and son recently drilled a water well for the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department. They drilled 275 feet and had a water flow of 250 gallons per minute. This was their donation to the Fire Department and was appreciated by all Cherokee residents.

Amanda Gage, daughter of Dean and Andrea Gage of San Saba was named “Our Little Miss” during the Hill Country District 7 & 8 OLM Pageant. Amanda was selected by all of the contestants to receive the coveted award of Miss Congeniality.

A new Data Scope 21 Cardiac Monitor was recently purchased by San Saba Hospital. The monitor adds a much needed service to cardiac patients receiving treatment at the hospital.

Judy Bolm, Velma Gauny and Ellen Jones had a busy weekend. They traveled to Stonewall where they joined a bicycling group out of Austin on a 25 mile bike ride. Velma said it was pretty hard but they made it. They also went shopping in Kerrville and spent the night in Fredericksburg.
