80 Years Ago February 21, 1946
San Saba is still improving in the eastern part. Martin Burleson is building a house on his land which will be occupied by the Ernest Robinson family. Mrs. Jim Lewis is re-roofing and repairing her home.
The Garrett Brothers have opened a tire store in the building south and next door to the post office. This writer wishes these home boys success in their new vocation.
Vernon Walton has just recently finished an addition onto his garage and has opened up for business. This is the third garage in out town now. Maybe the business won’t be so congested as heretofore.
Mrs. Walter Barclay has opened up a coffee shop in the place where the Christian Beauty Shop was located.
Improvements made in the courthouse here during the past two months have included considerable work in the county library and in the ladies’ lounge adjoining. New paint and calcimine have been used throughout the two large rooms, with bookshelves re-arranged and other improvements made in the library.
40 Years Ago February 27, 1986
Bertis Wood had his 97th birthday Feb. 22, at this home in Richland Springs Housing Authority where he lives by himself and keeps his own house (so to speak).
The San Saba Tennis Team picked up three wins over the weekend including a defeat of Rochelle with a score of 12-6, a win over Burnet of 16-7 and a defeat of Lampasas with a 15-3 score.
The Southside Texaco located at 402 South High in San Saba has opened under the ownership of Donald Frisbee with minor and major auto repairs furnished by the Auto Repair Shop owner, Johnny Gauny.
George F. Stewart, Rural Fire Defense Instructor with the Forest Service, presented a King Size Check in the amount of $4,000 to the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department. Present to accept the check were James Reavis, San Saba City Administrator and assistant Fire Chief, David Parker, Fire Chief, San Saba County Judge Thomas Bowden, who was instrumental in obtaining the funds and Mayor Joe Ragsdale. The $4,000 will be applied toward the purchase of a new fire truck for the Volunteer Fire Department to carry a foam unit purchased for the VFD by the Lion’s Club.
So many men showed up to work on the Richland Springs fire station - they did all the electrical wiring and put on the roof ( and that’s a lot of roof). So many individuals are giving so much time and money to this project, which should be completed in the near future.
