Down Memory Lane

100 Years Ago September 24, 1925

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Taylor received a wire this week from Dallas that they had a new granddaughter. A sweet little daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gates of Dallas.

Cage Moore has been elected captain of the football team with Harris Fagg as line-captain. This is Cage’s last year for San Saba and we are with him––win or lose.

The San Saba High School will have two literary societies this year, the “Evens” and the “Odds”. The societies will take time about in putting on programs every other Friday afternoon. The officers for the “Even” Society are Genieve Halden, President; Wm. Daily, Vice-president; Luther Gunter, Secretary; Christine Burke, Treasurer. The program committee consists of Margaret Baker, Wm. B. Smith, Ethel Laird, and the president.

The Fair Association and several of the concessionaires at last Fair secured rain insurance and on account of the heavy rain, the following losses were paid by the Hartford Insurance Company, through the Robert L. Seiders agency: Fair Association, $400; Light and Ice company, $100; M. A. Morris and J. L. Walker, $25; A. L. Hamrick $50; T. J. Cummins $100.

60 Years Ago September 23, 1965

We salute a rugged individual, a San Saba citizen who likes to do things for people, Sherman Russell of the McMillin community. He has been ram-rod of the “93 Club” since its organization. He delights in getting members for the San Saba County Historical Society, and has also been a faithful member himself.

Connie Bagley, senior candidate, was elected San Saba FFA Sweetheart by the FFA Chapter in an election by secret ballot. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bagley. Other candidates for the honor included Jane Sterner, junior; Laura Pool, sophomore; and Chris Bagley, freshman.

Mrs. J. D. Smith and children left by plane for Detroit, Michigan, where they will join Mr. Smith, who is a member of the Detroit Lion football team. J. D. had the misfortune to injure his knee recently and had undergone surgery but is out of the hospital how and hopes to be back in the game within three or four weeks.

What a lovely way to say “Happy Birthday!” Mrs. Willie Belle Ledbetter, county treasurer, has returned from a week’s visit in Springfield, Mass. Her son-in-law, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. (Marie) Charles Clark, who live there, gave her a roundtrip plane ticket from Dallas, so that she might pay them a visit.
