110 Years Ago August 19, 1915
A. L. Gatlin has moved his grocery stock from the Sam Taylor building to the Neal building, which is just one door east of the former location, and already has everything conveniently arranged in his new headquarters.
The Owl pool hall, which was in the McAtee building on the west side of the square has moved to the Taylor building.
The San Saba Manufacturing Co., are remodeling the old lumber sheds on the southwest corner of the square and adjoining their plant and it will be made into a modern and up-to-date Garage. The auto business in San Saba has grown by leaps and bounds the past few months and this company is one of the pioneers in the business here.
Geo. A. Tumlin, representing the Fort Worth marble and granite works was here for a few days investigating the marble industry of this section and took with him samples for testing purposes.
Rural route No. 4 has been extended 4 1/2 miles and is now a standard route. It now goes to the Abney place on the Colorado river. Arthur Hill, the carrier, has not raised any objection to the change as it increases his salary.
Mrs. Anna Brown and daughter, Miss Arlene have moved to the W. N. Ellis home in West end.
Mrs. Cordelia Walker and son, Melvin, left last week for Hico to visit relatives.
60 Years Ago August 19, 1965
Construction will begin soon on a cabin in Bend for Mr. and Mrs. Don Portie and family of Houston, with Bill Sargent of Lampasas doing the work. The cabin will be located over-looking the river at the Pope place.
Ricky Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hall, exhibited the Grand Champion pet, his dog, Spot, at the Pet Show held on Little Field in connection with the San Saba County Fair.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Sadler, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Bradford of Goldthwaite, visited Cleveland during the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Steve Sadler in Houston where they attended the Houston Astros-New York Mets game in the dome stadium.
Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Ned Stringfellow at their lake cottage were their children, Major and Mrs. W. J. (Bill) Stringfellow and children of Peru, Indiana, Mrs. Nedra Elkins and daughter, Tina Ann, of San Antonio and Mrs. Bill Stringfellow’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Castleberry of Sherman.
The 1965 football season opened officially with the first practice session for the Coyotes on a wet field. A afternoon shower dumped one-inch of rain in the area, giving real football weather. There were 25 boys who reported for practice.
