May 30, 1985

Lane M. Bates, 23, a 1980 graduate of Richland Springs High School was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Bates, the son of Ralph L. Bates of Brownwood and Helen R. Bates of Salina, Kansas is a graduate of the ROTC program at Howard Payne University.

A total of 45 San Saba High School seniors will be awarded their diplomas marking the end of their high school days as they enter the realm of more responsibility as they begin to plan their futures. Cheray Isham is the Valedictorian and graduates with a 97.470 average for the year. Dani Hardy is the Salutatorian graduating with a 97.272 average.

A group of ladies, Mrs. Barbara Maddox, Jenny Boultinghouse, Candace Cook, Luise Tharp, Bobby Burke, Ezra Cook, and Mary Low, went to San Antonio and spent the night taking the river walk and just enjoying themselves.

Alan Longley, son of Leonard and Juanita Longley of San Saba, has been awarded the 135th TTW Instructor Pilot of the Quarter Award for his outstanding contribution to the F-15 pilot training program. Longley was recognized specifically for the herculean efforts he put forth to ensure the squadron’s yearly, quarterly, and daily flying schedules producing superior results.

Nineteen year-old Kevin Jones signed his letter of intent to play football at Abilene Christian University. Kevin graduated from Cherokee High School as his senior class Salutatorian.

Tarleton’s Alicia Cummings, a junior from San Saba, has been presented the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship for the Central Region.

The 7th grade GT students instructed a computer literacy class, “What’s Inside Your Computer?”, for all the K-4 San Saba Elementary students. Students teaching the class were Chase Key, Amanda Carpenter, Kayce Ellis, Kayla Ellis, Maleny Mares, and Nicole Sears.

The San Saba Armadillo High School baseball team played the 911 team in a fundraiser game at Mill Pond Park. The 911 team, led by their captain, Kevin Barclift, were comprised of players from the San Saba Volunteer fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, TCAB, Game Wardens, and the San Saba Police Department. Approximately 200 people came to watch the game and support the fundraiser by making donations and purchasing food and drinks from the concession stand. The game lasted 7 innings and the High School team defeated the 911 team by the score of 16 to 10.
