Down Memory Lane

100 Years Ago March 26, 1925

Mrs. Laura Kelley is entertaining her sister, Mrs. J. B. McDonald, from Omaha, Neb. at her ranch home south of town. These ladies had not seen each other for fifty-three years. Mrs. McDonald will probably spend the summer.

Mrs. J. E. Bell and children, Punkin and Buddy of Fredericksburg visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Moore.

Lewis Richarson and Harry Winkle threw open the doors of their new shop and were flooded with patrons during the day. Some had left their whiskers grow for a fortnight to get a good stand for them to go to work on. Their shop is very neat in every detail and they will not lack patronage.

Cattle feeding is the order of the day in Sloan with the livestock man now. The time has come when if the cattle are to live they have to be fed as there is nothing in the pastures for them to eat.

Lampasas County Com. J. W. Baxter is restoring the Bend bridge. We hope they will apply some paint. We think the barrel of paint would be cheaper than a new bridge as the rust continues to consume it.

60 Years Ago March 22, 1965

Mrs. Henry Trotter was honored on her birthday in the Ranchmen’s Tower Hotel, where her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dessie Hardin and Mattie Howard entertained at tea. Others present were Mmes. T. J. Burnham, M. W. Trussell and Werden Scott.

Sergeant Milligan of the United States Marine Corps was present at San Saba High School to talk to the senior boys. Sergeant Milligan is from Austin. He told the boys of their duty to their country. The Sergeant was trying to interest young recruits for the Marine Corps.

The San Saba High School One Act Play cast was chosen for “Patterns” by Amy Lowell, and will be presented in Fredericksburg. The one-act play cast is as follows: Lady Isabell, Mabel Anne Perry; Lord Richard, Leon Stewart; Hobson, Larry Smith (man servant); and Dulcie, Barbara Brown. “Patterns” develops the theme that everything in life follows some sort of pattern.

Captain Clem W. Nicolini was in San Saba when he visited his uncles, Barney and Mark Sullivan, and his aunt, Mrs. Gene Harbor. Capt. Nicolini arrived back in the States after a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He is in the Quartermaster Corps and served as a advisor to the Vietnamese Army for the last several months in Danang. He said things were getting pretty hot in that area prior to his departure.

Taylor Lusty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Lusty is one of the 24 San Saba High School students enrolled in Distributive Education. He is sacking groceries at Modern Way Grocery, where he is taking on-the-job training in grocery retailing. He has DE class and other classes in the morning and works afternoons Monday through Friday and all day Saturday.
