80 Years Ago February 8, 1945
Park Chevrolet Company is making extensive improvements on the buildings owned by B. J. Park across the street from the Hotel San Saba and enlarged shop quarters are being built in the main building with display space immediately inside the show windows.
Alvin Robinson, former superintendent of schools here, and wife left the first of the week for Menard.
Albert Behrens, Seaman 1-C, and Mrs. Behrens announce the arrival of a son, who was born on January 25 at the San Saba Hospital. He has been given the name of Thomas Arnold. His father is serving somewhere in the Pacific in the U. S. Navy.
Pvt. Newell S. Oliver is now stationed in India, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Doris Oliver, and he is handling the mail for an India Wing of the Air Transport Command. He tells that he is getting plenty to eat and has butter, eggs and plenty of fresh vegetables.
Mrs. Mable Clare Johnston honored her daughter, Anna Clare (Chuckie), with a house party when two of her classmates, Misses Gerrye Montgomery and Earl Laston of Mt. Pleasant, accompanied her home from Denton where they are attending school.
Hayden’s Goodyear Store was opened in the building which was recently purchased by C. D. Hayden next door to the City Hall and Mr. Hayden has a complete line of Goodyear auto and home products.
70 Years Ago February 10, 1955
Mrs. H. H. Moore is visiting in Laredo and helping care for a new grandson, Arthur III. The baby was born Jan. 25. Grandparent are Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Moore of Richland Springs and Mr. and Mrs. a. H. Horea Sr. of Ft. Worth.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Stewart visited in Dallas with Mr. Stewart’s son and family. They also attended the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo in Fort Worth and the Santa Gertrudis sale and returned home.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lee Taff honored their daughter, Maureen, on her eighth birthday with a theatre party. Those present were Ceryl Taylor, Katherine Seddon, Francene Shapiro, Mary Bearden, Martha Timberlake, Glenda Gage and Gale Phillips.
John Altizer, 4- H Club boy from Cherokee, walked off with first prize in the Sears Foundation Heavy Litter Contest for the Coleman area recently with his litter of 12 pigs that weighed 480 pounds. Altizer’s litter also was the heaviest in the entire district comprising 22 counties. He will receive a $25 cash award.
