Down Memory Lane

40 Years Ago September 27, 1984

David Edmondson, 18, a 1984 graduate of San Saba High School won 1st place in the Texas State Outdoor Prone Rifle Championship shooting competition in the Junior category. His score was 3174-199x.

Ronnie Simpson of Cherokee has been named to the President’s Honor Roll for the Summer Quarter at Texas State Technical Institute in Sweetwater.

Leading the cheers at the 7th and 8th grade Little Dillo football games this year will be Vieney Hernandez, Christa Martin, Cathy McGregor, Jeanette Edmondson, Cecilia Jimenez and Natalie Scott, head cheerleader.

While going to church in Locker, Doyle Slaughter killed a big rattle snake. Burlie Edwards killed a big one over at his house over the weekend. Also Larry Griffin killed one on the O. B. McGary farm.

In 1870 the first school in the Bowser community was located on the Colorado River and was called Flat Rock. In 1881 the school underwent four moves before moving to the present location. Bowser was the second school district to be organized in San Saba County. The old building is still standing and is now used for community affairs. People of the community have the annual Bowser Homecoming each year in the present building.

20 Years Ago September 30, 2004

The football teams from Richland Springs had another clean sweep. The Jr. high Coyotes traveled to Lohn and defeated the Eagles soundly, the Jr. varsity went to Zephyr and beat the Bulldogs and the varsity Coyotes defeated the Lohn varsity Eagles. All three games were stopped with the 45 point mercy rule.

San Saba ISD twirlers Amber Plumbly, Amanda Jones and Karin Keeney traveled to Haskell, Texas to compete in UIL Twirling Competition. Amanda & Amber, both 7th graders, received a one, which is the highest score possible. The judge said they had a lot of potential. Senior Karin Keeney also received a one.

Worth Wood and Thomas Smithhart caught a 42 lb., 25 lb., 22 lb, and 10 lb. catfish on perch in the Colorado River at Wood Farm at Pecan Grove.

Besides Friday night high school football, three homecoming queens wee crowned in San Saba County. For San Saba High Leslie Haug was crowned while Richland Springs’ Terah Sealy and Cherokee’s Natasia Jackson were also crowned queens.

Congratulation, Larry, for your outstanding accomplishment! Larry Daniel, owner of Ma & Pa’s Restaurant, won the nationwide “Fiery Food Challenge” held in Dallas, Texas. Larry’s “Hot Tango Salsa” won first place out of 867 entries in the “Hot Sauce Division.”
