Down Memory Lane

100 Years Ago June 12, 1924

Gene Harber is fixing things around his river farm home like he intends to stay permanently. He is making some valuable improvements on his residence. He has a job with Uncle Same carrying the mail on Route 4, and at odd times he raised truck, berries and fine pecans.

Kelly Vardaman had the misfortune to lose a good mule. He preferred to die indoors, and went through the sleeping porch into the kitchen, but as soon hustled out by Mr. Vardaman and fell dead in the yard.

J. A. Quinn, one of our rural mail carriers is taking his vacation. Mrs. Quinn is visiting her parents in East Texas during his vacation, as this enables him to milk the cows, feed the little chickens and turkeys and do all the other chores which usually fall to the lot of the housewife on her daily routing.

Dock Jones and the other wolf hunters were out with their wolf hounds and rounded up three wolves. Within the last month or so these boys have caught some six or eight wolves, mostly puppies.

Supt. G. L. Huckaby took his Sunday School Class on an outing. They took their camping outfit and partook themselves to the river where they spent the night and had a good swim and a general good time.

Great difficulty has been experienced this season in obtaining cotton stands. Some have replanted two or three times without satisfactory results. The crop averages two to three weeks late as every month has been below normal temperatures. Some are paying one dollar per acre for cotton chopping. Oats are cut and shocked, ready for thrashing. Grasshoppers are getting their share of the crops.

80 Years Ago June 15, 1944

Mrs. Worth H. Jones and little daughter went to Waco to meet husband and father, Sgt. Jones, who has been stationed in the Mediterranean area for the pat 20 months. Jones, former rancher here, has never seen the daughter.

J. T. Allison of San Saba believes that he has as many grandsons as anyone in the county in service. He has 8 grandsons, all native Texans, in the army and navy. Mr. Allison, 77 years of age, keeps up with the activities of his grandsons and takes a pride in what they are doing in the army and navy.

Lieut. Elaine M. Roberts of the Medical Corps at Camp Gruber, Okla., will meet her husband, Stoy D. Roberts of the Hotel San Saba, in Dallas on June 22 for their ninth anniversary on June 23. Lieut. Roberts has been in the service since January and is in the Nurse Corps of the Eighth Service Command.

Roy Green of San Angelo has purchased the stock and fixtures of the W H. Kimbrough Jewelry Store and is making interior repairs on the building and is redecorating the building where this pioneer jewelry store of San Saba has been located for many years.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Oehler are the proud parents of a fine baby boy born June 10. He was named Dennis Richard. The grandparent are Mrs. Arthur Sagebiel of Fredericksburg and MR. and Mrs. Richard Oehler of Locker.
